Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

I'm very sorry this is happening but I understand it

I really respect everyone opinions and I am truly sorry anyone got laid off. As someone who spent sometime in "unknown land" without any job prospect, I can totally understand the frustration. However, I also understand the reason why the company is doing what it is doing. Not a single company wants to have the burden of having mass layoffs on the news. Not a single company wants to hire security guards to escort its own people. But this is necessary for one good reason. If they announced before hand who is laid off and who is not, the whole company would have descended into complete chaos with some all the back-stabbing and "why me?" attitude. You might dispute what am saying, but deep inside you know it is true, and would definitely have happened. If they had not brought in security guards to escort people out, there would always be "this one guy/gal" that would go ape shit at their HR rep/manager. You might also dispute this, but all of you on this forum know of at least one person in your group who would have done just that. It would have also been extremely inappropriate for the company to bring security guards just for that "one guy/gal" needless to say how embarrassing it would have been to single them out. So say what you have to say, but what happened was necessary. You are not the first one to get laid off, nor will be the last. What happened is something that we all signed up for when we entered this industry, and truly a part of what makes this industry so unique.

Sorry if this seemed like a rant.

I worked at another company with budget cuts resulting in abolished positions. The individuals in the roles were tasked with applying for roles within the company or departing on a predetermined day in the distant future. The entire process was civil. No severance was offered but the individuals were allowed flexibility to seek employment elsewhere without management intervention. In the end very few if any individuals departed without a job. Quite a few individuals not involved in the abolished positions used the situation as an opportunity to pursue opportunities at other companies. And so the process does not need to involve calls to a conference room and security guards hiding around every corner.
