Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Thanks for open communication well in advance!

Kudos to leadership for open communication. That gave people thinking of leaving within the next year or two anyway the time to make preparations to volunteer for severance, which doubtless saved some jobs of ones who will stay longer term.

Commodities swing, and layoffs become necessary. But what percent of people in history leave a job with 3 weeks' pay per year of service? It'd be fair if we were merely paid a day for working a day, but to also be paid a severance to leave? Huge blessing. COP treats employees well while on the job, and has even treated us very well when a layoff became necessary.

The circumstances will be hard for some, and that is very sad and regrettable. But for many, it's a door to other opportunities.

Thanks COP!

Of mgt feathers their own nest - duh. That is always so - "it's good to be king." The point is, still, that this has been a better than average gig, and I would argue much better than average. Forget mgt and think about the pay, bennies, vaca, 9/80, savings, vcip, ... Where else are you gonna get that?

But the ones who made the strategic mistakes are not getting layed off. Are u saying the should not have any accoutability

Of course you are upset - everyone is upset. But that does not mean you are entitled to something just because you are upset.

Business is not a charity. Yes, some like COP are more charitable than others, but business is mostly quid pro quo - "what have you done for me lately?"

We're some bad decisions made? Certainly. Like you haven't made any?

I predict that after you've been around a little more that you will see that this was a pretty good place to work.

So no one is supposed to be upSet about hiring too many people then having to lay them off. Also the bad strategy of doubling down on shale and selling good properties to fund it. We are supposed to be ok with bad strategic de ions that cost a lot of jobs?

Having worked at other places, this really is true. Other places screw you, and people here who have no experience with the real world outside COP are bashing the company not realizing What they have.

And when I say advance notice, I mean that the fall layoffs were announced as a likely possibility, even before the spring layoffs occurred. How many companies give that kind of 'heads up'?? Pretty considerate.

No, I'm not COP HR. I served in technical positions for as many years as I worked for the company. And we truly are blessed! I hope most can be thankful and I bet most likely are. A site of this nature will attract a disproportionate number of comments from malcontents, among the several informational posts.

God is good. Seek Him, pray to Him, read and study His Word, and get busy being productive rather than sucking on sour grapes! Life is too short to mope, and I've already done more than my share of moping in my short life anyway. Time to count my blessings and go do something for someone-- including someone who will give out more of those green certificates of appreciation with presidents' faces on them... haha.

As noted the notice is a legal requirement of the WARN Act, not out of the good nature of ConocoPhillips. As one of the individuals involved in the April adventures the call to the conference room and the layoff was a complete surprise. I honestly thought the call from the manager was associated with a discussed promotion! ugh...

Nope, the advance notice was a legal requirement of the WARN Act because headcount cuts exceeded the threshold. Not the case in April.

Those walked-out in April got no notice and no EOI....it was their feedback that got you some notice and a chance for EOI.

This guy is right. Glad to see some sanity finally instead of a bunch of whiny crybabies who think they're entitled to a paycheck. You've done so much for the company? Great, that's what you were paid to do. No one owes you shit.
