Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

I don't work for the QQ. I work for a competitor. But frankly I want Q to do well.

Healthy competition from healthy companies is good news for tech workers. It means greater opportunities for everyone. Great that Q got back part of the S7 business. Hopefully this was a wake-up call.

However QC got to where it is today, it over hired and jacked up salaries to a level that other IC companies could not compete. QC has damaged other IC companies’ ability to compete, and they shut down. If that is fair competition, then what QC employees will face in coming months is fair game. Some say get over it and move on. The problem is that there will be nowhere to move on to. Get ready to work Mediatek or Hauwei; download your knowledge and get toss aside, again.

Well by that standard, any taxation in foreign country or ITC fine or injunction or patent trolling or allegedly shady licensing -- sounds just like theft! Move on. Clearly the board did. All this ransom and theft talk is reminiscent of siliconinvestor board again. What if your pet investment actually did something wrong according to laws of another land. Should they get a free pass for making good modems?

@Anonymous172785 theft is theft and American companies should know better. But the CEO's and board members look past the long term implications in return for short term gains. Foreign markets look at western corporations and lick their chops knowing that the westerners will sell their souls for the quick buck.

Competition is good. Qualcomm did not wipe out competition. Samsung and Meditek have been two of the ASIC hardware and software companies that have been able to develop competitive products. Companies such as TI could develop hardware but did not deliver software. Intel has struggled to deliver a competitive hardware/software product but is making progress. The standards and regulations result in many modems and frequency bands. It makes it difficult to deliver a competitive product because so many modes must be supported.

Don’t forget that QC systematically wiped out all companies working on mobile, except for China. Although Chinese government intervention was heavy handed, it was trying to prevent monopolistic practices that QC has successfully conducted elsewhere. Now laid off QC workers have nowhere to go. Those who left QC before this round of layoffs had a easy time finding jobs, but this time is different.
