To my former colleagues,
I wish I didn't have to write this, but I think it will help in a little way, to those being laid off. I will list my experiences with the transition service in Calgary.
First, do attend the sessions. While most of them may not be very useful, the networking with other people does help. There are people from other companies, who I didn't know, that helped others in our group find a job. You never know which contact helps.
Second, they will advise you to take a physical copy of your resume to the company that has posted a position, and give it to the hiring manager. I have never seen this actually work, though customizing a resume and covering letter and delivering it does keep you busy.
Third, Do not, I repeat Do Not, press the Right Skills button on their web page. It has a large list of useful courses, but you have only 90 days to use it if you press the button. Many of my friends and I inadvertently pressed that button.
Fourth, make sure you take the financial course early, which deals with sole proprietorships. Since you will get a large severance, it provides useful suggestions on how to avoid paying extra taxes on it next year.
Fifth, most of the people that I know got jobs, got it through former contacts.
Sixth, the LinkedIn and customizing Covering letters were the most useful courses for me. The covering letter helped me land a job. The interview training with Terry was very useful too.
Seventh, stay positive, and you will get a job. Take a vacation, indulge in a hobby, spend time with friends and family.
Good Luck
