Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Employee chopped and 3 expensive Contractors kept in the team...well done COP

We were 4 members in a team...I was only employee in my team and had 3 expensive contractors ...I was SGL-12 making under $100k and contractors would charge $130/Hr translates to $260k/year/per contractor as they are full time..

Management decided to CHOP me off and keep the contractors... decision was not due to performance...i have been better performing for the most part (received various special recognition awards).... but only because some VP/Manager who knew nothing about the team and randomly decided to layoff me and keep contractors.... WoW Well-done COP.... Really was this from COST project? can any justify or give any logical reason of this action? i cant find any... Believe me guys only thing that matters at COP is how well you LICK BALLS of senior management... nothing will change this culture.... i am disappointed on not being on payroll but very very happy to be out of COP...this culture is bound to destroy the company

There is a lot of truth in this......

"....perhaps you stated something at sometime that upset a vp or director and so you were blackballed long ago. ConocoPhillips is using the layoffs as an opportunity to clean house of "bad fits".

A few points -

  1. On paper, the contractors cost less even though they take home more pay, but that's phony! Many of the "Burdens" on employee costs also exist for contractors, such as office, IT costs, and utility costs. Yep, all that stuff gets allocated to your charge out rate at the home office. That's how it gets charged out though the BUs. Also, since the admin asst. and the managers don't charge directly much of the time, that also goes onto your charge-out rate. For a contractor, the invoice gets charged directly and the overheads get allocated to a shrinking employee pool.

  2. COP is trying to reduce operating costs, but more importantly COP is trying to SHOW investors that they are reducing costs! One way to do that is to demonstrate a dramatic reduction in total EMPLOYEE headcount.

Since Texas is a right to work state doesn't make sense that expensive contractors would be kept on instead of an employee. Right to work means employers can hire fire at will so do contractors really bring flexibility or way to raise workforce numbers while announcing employee headcount dropping?

sorry to see you go .. but I agree the COP prefers contractors .. They don't mind paying high rates .. Not every contractor is an expert .. Contractors by nature have to work hard to stay. Here it is more biased towards contractors either they are good or have good connections .. .. I wonder why they hire Employees ? and ruin their life later on ?

For the most part the contractors are the ones with experience. I know every engineer feels they are important but they are easily replaced by a contractor. Yes we make more but we're the ones making things happen. Out here where the work goes on you can't just copy and paste to get things done. Thanks for saving one of our jobs.

It was probably either your head or your boss'... Obvious... plus supervisors tend to like having contractors under them to justify that they are busy at the moment, ... not to mention that they may be so incompetent that they need someone to do their work anyway... I know quite a few who work this way...Aaaah, and the ball licking... those that have been promoted, are the best at it...

171688: I was always in good books of my supervisor.... but he said his input was not even taken in making this decision.... and the team i worked in is to stay long term i was in operations that is intended to kept running for long term....

The total benefits package is noted on the online human resources system. Multiply that total benefits package by 1.5 as a conservative estimate and you will note an employee is in fact less cost to the organization as whole in the situation mentioned.

Despite tall tales otherwise, performance is not a factor in the layoffs. The function of the team as a whole will most likely not be required in the near future due to some merger / acquisition activity or the function will be eliminated altogether. The contractors can be released with no notice whatsoever. But then again, perhaps you stated something at sometime that upset a vp or director and so you were blackballed long ago.
