Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

Correction....New top level mgmt. doesn't dictate product type....everything else is theirs

Put the blame where it belongs. Simplified - New top level mgmt. is responsible for the running of the business. Making sure that all is in place to manufacture/source and distribute product to retailers and consumers. They are also responsible for administering the business and tracking that which impacts the performance of same business. This is where they dropped the ball in a major way. They failed miserably on two accounts: 1) In acknowledging and addressing the problem that our products (Mattel labeled) were becoming un-desireable. And....2) Allowing our overhead to strangle the value of the products that were still desirable. So.... yes, they can be blamed for not changing the guard at the marketing and design suites early enough and...over-priced, under-valued product. But they can not be blamed or held accountable for PRODUCT SELECTION, TYPE & DIRECTION. This responsibility falls solely on the shoulders of top mgmt. residing at the ES Handler Team Center. Yes, TimK and other of the same circle are now gone but strangely enough those really responsible for our current dire state still walk the hallways of the HTC. You have to ask....will there ever be a fix?

And....how bout our excessive overhead? The running joke in the toy industry. How many VP's does it take to....at Mattel, LOTS!

It is interesting to look at the company in comparison to the Roman empire. If one thinks of the similarities, Mattel started out as a small company with an innovative approach to product. Rome with an innovative approach to government. Mattel grew over time to swallow smaller companies and brands to increase its market share. As Rome did with conquering other city states etc. At some point Rome became too large to manage and there were a series of changes at the top. Mattel seems to have grown too large and too diverse and without a strong leader that has a clear vision. Towards the end Rome changed from a conquering nation and adopted a more defensive strategy of trying to stabilize and maintain their territories similar to the company trying to stabilize its brands. In the end Rome grew fat and complacent allowing other empires around them to grow and threaten their assets. The empire broke up under different rulers and sub-empires but never regained the glory days of old. There are striking similarities to the company and the more energy is devoted to trying to "keep the empire together" the less energy is devoted to finding new areas of opportunity. There is only so much focus to go around and you cannot try to be and do everything at the same time because you end up with and as nothing. Ask Barbie, she doesn't know who she is...

Until Barbie cleans house on the Vp level in all functions , it won't get better. So glad KC is focusing on the Barbie Instagram page. Way to be relevant to your core 4-6 year olds.

You are 100% correct as that's what we've complaining about on this site from day one, so kinda preaching to the choir here. Yes, the people under TKilpin & D Wad are still here...why? There needs to be a cleansing but that will never happen as the ShoeShining club is what rules here. MattHell should be case study on how to trash a once great $ making company. How to Ruin a Company 101. Hire Marketers how can't/don't Market but instead pick colors, & cost reduce concepts, keep Designers who can't draw/properly communicate concepts, & turn what were once degreed Engineers into admins. How many EVP's, SVP's, VP's & Directors does it take to trash a company? approx. 350 world wide & that's a conservative number. Are you reading this Hasbro, Thinkway, Disney, & Pixar? I hope so.
