If San Diego numbers in this layoff were 1300, and assuming numbers elsewhere was around 1000, there seems to be another round of 2300 coming in the next few months. Remember 4500 targeted cut!.
As a veteran of a few layoffs ;) I know that in the initial round of layoff - Product Management, Project Management groups endure a lot, followed by engineering and R&D. What you will see in the next round is many Directors/VPs/Top engineering management will be cut. There is no science to this. Usually, in a layoff a group has to meet a certain budget, and in the initial round, Directors save themselves and their Managers and usually staff at the bottom of the ladder are affected. In the subsequent layoffs, VPs/Directors/Managers are likely to be taken out in large numbers as they cannot play the same game they did the last time..their numbers will be more significant than the engineering staff...
This is just my prediction today -- based on my first hand experience of seeing 2 layoffs in big firms (where I was not affected luckily), but wait until April to find out.
