Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Your opinions

Our GM of many years is leaving. We are a tier 4 store that is less then profitable. Anyone care to weight in with what are the odds they just close us. Here's hoping.

Well sadly my store was a tier 4 and our store closes next saturday at 12pm..they wanted to get their last money season BTS that is and conveniently the lease is up as well...smh I only continued working because I was promised a severance...If I do not get it..there is going to be lots of trouble. I put in 8 years with this company and I have never ever been laid off from a job, but I am happy that I only have 3 semesters left of school and have hopes that I will make it. This company used to be better, but they have no idea what direction they want to take..Way too many skus in store that dont sell, too many confusing programs, Good luck to all of you found in this same position.

First and most importantly YOUR TOAST! Your manager probably left because he was taking a raft of S#$T all made up and thought he was about to be fired OR he was just smarter than most and has been looking for a while and found something better.

Now this is VERY important... most ex Staples associates have moved on to better... so many in fact that Staples is now BUYING some of them back. They are so screwed up it must become a book or maybe even a movie.

For you personally, take the advice offered above on doing the math about severance. If you are over 12 years of service hang in and take the package.

Without knowing the particulars of your store, I wouldn't say the odds are in your favor. Unless you have a serious amount of tenure with the company (like, say, a decade) and are at the top of your pay scale for your position, your severance package probably isn't going to be worth sticking around for because it is taxed at a higher rate than your current pay. Honestly, you should take the advice of several other posters on this thread and at the very least start exchanging contact info with any fellow associates you may not have as of yet so you guys can help each other out with job leads. Get hooked into linkedin if you aren't already, and start looking around at what is available out there. Get your resume updated and at least be making those initial preparations now. You never know: even if your store ISN'T closing, you might find something better just by looking around.

There are many stores that are short a GM or AM position. They are rushing team sups and IAs through MIT program to fill the spots.

The same thing happened in my store. First the DM left followed by my GM a few months later. As soon as your lease is up, you'll be done. Plan now.

Depends when the lease is up. That is usually the end for non profitable T4s. As 141385 said, he could have been told the store is closing after BTS, and told not to tell anyone. More likely he just saw the writing on the wall and decided enough was enough. If the lease is not up soon they may throw a sacrificial lamb in there to run it until it does close, or they might just run it short a manager.

Your probably closing and it's not enough to make him stay till the end...that's hard and stressful. .get your resume updated quickly. Good luck!
