Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Really stressed!

Now i am really getting stressed current global markets decline will make the layoffs even worse...COP stock down to 43... oil wti @ 38.... now i am really scared looks like big trimming is coming up

i am in salary grade level 13 (lower end of COP salary grades) - hopefully i will be safe as i am fairly cheap for the company to pay

I hear ya, I'm SGL 11 making 72k fresh out of college in IT at COP. Thought I would put that out there due to the salary range debate.

Anonymous141815, that is nice, for younger folks, but those of us nearing retirement (upper 50's or later) should be respectively given the chance to retire with severence, either before the layoffs or during. It will be VERY DIFFICULT for a 60-year old to find related work in the energy field, especially in today's economy and at smaller cities than say, Houston. You either uproot and change your family and your life to go to pay to move to work somewhere else, or you retire poor. Or, you spend the next year working your resume and job search like a full-time job, and you exhaust all your severence and unemployment, and end up learning the hard lesson that you are too old and so you retire poorer. Or you go to school to try to change fields and after a year or two you now have student loans and are even poorer, so you retire broke and in more debt. Just saying.............

I have experience with two (2) companies that had major layoffs. People that had been there 20+ years got laid off and were as you would imagine devastated. But after about a year almost 85% had found other jobs, some required relocation, and many of those had found jobs that paid more or that the hours and jobs were better. So there’s life after COP just like any company. If you don’t get laid off take this as a wake up and get your resume in order and apply out in the market to keep your contacts and interviewing skills current. If you get pushed out then there are tons of resources and I would assume the company offers outplacement services also.

At the end of it all, family is the most important thing you have. You get one crack at this thing called life. Make it count. If you are let go, you will find another job. The work is still out there.

Anonymous 141683 if you are in a Petro technical role (engineering or geoscience) within the company entry level SGLs can range from 12 to 14 after you leave the new hire SGLs which should be based off of degree (bachelor to PhD). And this is different than where you would start in finance or IT. All SGL ranges are still the same no matter what role just where you start is different. This is also just based on data from the USA and taking with different coworkers in different departments so it is probably different globally.

So, now I am confused. You are all saying the salary range of an SGL-13 is different for different job titles, depending what your title is within the company? Because with over 25 years experience, my SGL level is only one above the SGL-13 new hire fresh out of college! Plus, 6 figures was only a reality about 6 years ago, so I do not think ConocoPhillips overpays compared to other energy companies. They are comparable/average, that's all.

Anonymous141351- My first post was trying to get at the point that some SGLs that are viewed as high and expensive in one position is actually a low and cheap SGL in a different position. I was not making any comparison to other companies.

Anonymous141271 You're right! As you clearly said "within the company" and as it was clearly said if you read the post, outside ConocoPhillips you'll find you make way too much money and are beyond overpaid.

Expand the horizons beyond the oil and gas cities and companies to avoid anxiety. The companies in the oil and gas cities without an E&P focus are not firing in mass but are not hiring in mass. Dallas, San Antonio and Austin continue to boom despite the layoffs in Houston via the E&P companies. The E&P companies pay above market due to the ups and downs (in theory).

And management is acting in the best interest of management. The down cycle retains the expensive management at the expense of the not-so-expensive non-management. Management need only turn the lights on in the morning and turn the lights off in the evening. Despite the E&P, no exploration and so no work and no production after the wells run dry and so no work.

Some say we are overpaid. I guess they forgot we can have our careers snatched away. Smart or impaired, we're all going to Walmart.

Anonymous -141268 depending on what your job is within the company SGL-13 is a SGL for new hires after there first few years so they are considered cheap vs people with more experience who are a few SGLs higher.

SGL 13 - you're making in the 6 figure terroritory, you aren't cheap! You'll love going elsewhere and finding out ConocoPhillips is paying higher than everyone else.

I know more SGL 11's with masters degrees at ConocoPhillips than I do anyone else.

door is closed and window is open. please cheer up. I had experienced one layoff before. and had to change the city to start the new better life...

you are not the only one to face the difficult time...but you are still young, and still have a lot new tech/info to learn...after several years, you would know nothing is that serious/tough to pass through.

I am not sure my future at COP, but I know I am a working hard and not stupid person, even laid off, i still can find the next job, even as waitress in a resturant or cashier in HEB to survive and support myself and/or family. I don't mind the job title. money/cash is the king.

so be positive and love and be loved by your families!
