fortunately it will actually be higher up this time. things are NOT looking good for this company. if it doesn't recover, it will be sold in pieces. so sad for the dedicated employees left, if there are any

Ms Vertigo you threw a hissy fit when you found out VP wasn't in your title. You were given a timeout and should kiss the ground you walk on you weren't fired for acting like a 2 year old. You treat your direct reports like they are pieces of garbage and take all their credit. Respect is earned not demanded.
Hopefully that lack of personality POS from the NY office gets the boot. I cannot stand working with her and her unappealing type a personality. No one likes being on her team.
Actually, with Global marketing, North American Marketing and Customer Marketing there has to be consolidation. The experiment failed. Not because having a global team and a North American team is a bad idea but because of the people placed on each team. Fast way to cut costs and trim the org.
If there is a bloodletting coming and marketing was just placed OVER design, guess who's insulated themselves from getting laid off? Good ol marketing!!! Design will be picked off like shooting fish in a barrel while marketing gets yet another re-org.
I know the new Marketing VP of Design and it's a stupid move. A Marketing guy officially over Design. Really? He's also a dyed in the wool yes man as well. He loves to do the dance at GHO so upper mismanagement will love him. And, he reports to another rocket scientist who just keeps getting promoted because he knows every cliche in the book and runs down the hall because he's late for yet another useless misguided meeting. What a joke that place has become and it just continues to get worse.....Can't wait for the drivel shell game headwinds & tailwinds BS that we'll hear at the end of Q3 & the even more terrible numbers that we'll see after Q4. The Keystone Cops of upper mismanagement don't have a clue as to what they are doing. No worries, they'll just fire more low level workers and hire more VP's & useless Directors that draw on walls. You know who you are if you're reading this :)
Fixing the problem of slumping sales can't be done until the culture at Mattel is revamped, and Mr. Sinclair will have his hands full with that task. Getting rid of old heads and bringing in fresh ideas will help. With Silicon Beach's development, there will be swift competition from much "cooler" companies, attracting talent. However, once Mattel gets a handle on its bureaucracy issues, there's no reason to believe that the company can't recover from its current sales decline, whether it's through reviving its current brands, or introducing new ones. How long it takes the company to get to that point, though, is anyone's guess. This will certainly take some time, and I doubt 2015 will end up being a particularly great year for Mattel.
hahahahahaha! The same people who put on a song and dance act like trained monkeys at GHO in charge of design is laughable!
Marketing OVER design has never worked. Especially when you have a bunch of twenty nothing childless women who "think" they know what a mom wants from a few focus groups and metrics that they learned in whatever silly college they attended. No real life experience whatsoever.
Using design as a service group for marketing is going to be a HUGE fail as it always has been. This is upper management grasping at straws because they cannot figure out how to fix the problem. As a Design Director in NYC I can tell you the problem hasn't been the quality of design it's the restrictions on cost and the marketing input that has stunted some really fantastic product over the past year. Marketing (and upper management more so) are the real culprits for our continued failure.
what happened yesterday? any news articles? initials to guess?
1 step forward 10 steps back. Typical Mattel. They show signs of life by getting rid of dead weight and than promote an average marketer to VP of Design. Than again the SVP and VP of Marketing are both dead weight. Especially the VP of Marketing. A career Mattel person who has NEVER proven himself.
The same structure was put into place in NYC - marketing OVER design....uh oh...is that who drives innovation in this place? what other innovation-driven trend setting companies operate this way? Not the successful ones....gulp
with yesterday's exit, it actually shows they may get rid of some of the dead weight - especially since HR was to blame for keeping a lot of the incompetents around. I have to imagine more SVP and EVPs will exit shortly over the next few weeks, both in NY and El Segundo. It's about time. However, while things are horrible there, it's not as dire as having to sell off the company in pieces. They'll cut back, retrench, and hopefully figure a few brands out. then again, the hiring in Hot Wheels of a marketing person as the new vp of design doesn't make any sense... so they still may be doomed.
