And those two roles, arrogant oil man and Lincoln the gentleman, were as different as any two roles could be! Truly a great actor, this Day-lewis!

Also, Plainview makes deal with Unocal (Union oil). He builds a pipeline from Kern county to Unocal facility on the coast. That way he gets a higher price for his oil. See Wiki quote below: "About 1910, Union Oil made a strategic alliance with the Independent Producers Agency, a group of small oil producers, to build pipelines from the Kern County oil fields to Union Oil facilities on the Pacific coast. This gave the independent producers an alternative to what they perceived as the low prices paid by Standard Oil and the high freight rates charged by the railroads to move crude oil.(4) It gave Union access to a large volume of crude oil. The situation was later fictionalized in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood."

Yes. Great movie. I saw it for the second time recently. Very appropriate in this context. Standard oil the predecessor to Chevron gets mentioned several times. Plainview gets offended when the Standard Oil guy takes a dig at him about how Plainview can take care of his son better after selling the business to Standard. Plainview uses threatening language to chastise him and walks away from the deal. Day-lewis got an Oscar. He got another one for his portrayal of Lincoln. That was his third best actor Oscar.

Anyone who enters our commodity-driven industry expecting a career without bloodshed is either naive or deranged or both.

Thanks for the clarification, Anon137692. This is Anon137644. I did see this movie. Daniel Day Lewis, the main character, was great in this movie. He is a great actor and the movie itself was a good one.

A little help for 137644. It's a reference to the movie There Will Be Blood.

The film follows the rise to power of Daniel Plainview - a charismatic and ruthless oil prospector, driven to succeed by his intense hatred of others and desperate need to see any and all competitors fail. When he learns of oil-rich land in California that can be bought cheaply, he moves his operation there and begins manipulating and exploiting the local landowners into selling him their property. Using his young adopted son H.W. to project the image of a caring family man, Plainview gains the cooperation of almost all the locals with lofty promises to build schools and cultivate the land to make their community flourish. Over time, Plainview's gradual accumulation of wealth and power causes his true self to surface, and he begins to slowly alienate himself from everyone in his life.
