I know that this is being held up by China's government getting into the antitrust game but wanted to see if you had an opinion about possible layoffs due to the merger between the two groups. I know that there are people at WD that see this as both positive and negative development as it relates to WD layoffs but I wanted to see if folks on this forum had any opinion about the subject. I know that my group here in Irvine might be on the chopping block (for different reasons) but at the same time if we need to be laid off now is the best time to go through layoffs as the economy is doing fairly well and it should not be that hard to find jobs for people who may lose them. Finally, please do not get me wrong, I've been with Western Digital for over five years now, and aside from a handful of bitter experiences my thoughts about the company are fairly good and positive.

WDisk headquarters will be in San Jose by mid 2017.
Irvine will still host HGST Santa Ana HDD team and existing Irvine Team, but on a much smaller scale (2 floors max)
Corporate headquarter will be in San Jose in near future, not Irvine.
Haha. "Reorg" means HGST takes over everything. "Reorg" of WD sub has barely started.
More than half of those in April layoff are still looking. If you had a hardware job good luck. Software or solidworks or ASIC development better chances. Many that left WD even up to 3 years ago are either looking, given up, or driving to SD etc. I heard on the radio the economy is its best since the recession. So that should mean that even though you are employed you could find a Better job. Try.
HGST just built a beautiful new headquarters building in Silicon Valley. HGST does most of the enterprise and all of the SSD business, which is the future of WD. WD Irvine sells hard drives to desktop and laptop users - a market that is quickly vanishing. My guess - and it's only a guess - is that WD headquarters will be moving to Silicon Valley, and that WD Irvine will become a relatively minor location.
