If the entire purpose for you to BYOB is to make money, why are you restricting yourself specifically to tech, when it's probably the most difficult kind of business to succeed in? If your entire purpose is to BYOB, you're better off trying to buy a franchise or some sort, and going low tech.

Depends on what you mean by "own thing". That's the purpose of why some of us diversify into real estate, completely different from techie stuff. Tech startups are extremely difficult, short of being an consulting firm that tries to grab business by hiring a bunch of contractors overseas. It's less a matter of technical talent as it is about who you know.
