Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Less than 1000 laid off in April in Houston?

A current employee mentioned this number a few weeks ago; not that many, all in either exploration or technology. Really messed me up to think I was that easy to pick off. No wonder COP hasn't felt the need to announce to its shareholders since the 'head-count reduction' so far is so miniscule (except for us, of course). Still burns though.

How come they are hiring again? There is a Staff Processing Geophysicist position on the website?

The latest post comes across as a personal attack on a previous poster. Is this what this site is for? Although that poster's opinion may not be shared by everyone, there is no need to bash him/her. Sounds like some frustration was boiling over there.

In response to Anonymous102900:

No, there wasn't revolutions against this before. If you wanted a job you are guaranteed you aren't going to lose, then you should have gone with a government job. This is capitalism.

In Canada, it was 200 persons laid off on March 18th. About a 100 before that, over January and February. As per the law in Alberta, any layoffs over 50 persons has to be reported to the government. I believe Norway and the UK were over 300 persons each, but I could be wrong.

Agree; profits before people, always! Long live the plutocrats and the oligarchy (in business and in politics, of course). Weren't there revolutions against this before? I recall hearing about one in 1776 (in this country), gradually reversed, then the Sherman Antitrust Act, also largely ignored and reversed today.

1000 COP employees laid off in Houston... but what about Bartlesville, UK, Norway, lower 48, Alaska, Canada? but what about contractors? Total of 20,000 employees and 20,000 contractors some 12 months ago but today? I suspect 40-50% fewer contractors and 20-30% fewer employees today. 1000 laid off employees in Houston is a significant number of employees. The shareholder are concerned with stock price and dividends.
