The severance policy has always stated that there was a basic and a supplemental. To he the supplemental, you have to sign the waiver. It's in the benefits handbook if I recall correctly.

I does make them "seem" shady, but I think they are letting enough people go that they just do not want to deal with the cost of settling or fighting lawsuits. Why do you suppose people might want to sue? Those not directly impacted might just think people are disgruntled, BUT there are reasons people might want to sue. 1). COP is not laying off people based on performance even though early announcements seemed to indicate that was the plan. COP is letting go of people with long, STRONG performing career records, forcing early retirement, translation - OLDER STAFF). Talk about causing disgruntled people! Who wants to devote their work lives to a company for 30 plus years to be escorted out the building by armed guards and treated like a criminals. The people who had achieved this were not even allowed dignified retirements. 2). Most staff were of the understanding that a layoff with severance was deemed necessary if the employee's position was eliminated. Well . . . replacements have been named practically before those laid off were out the door. Maybe what REALLY happened was that a lot of NEW jobs were unnecessary, translation - YOUNGER STAFF, and COP wants to keep YOUNGER staff who are paid less, so they have let go of OLDER staff and replaced them with YOUNGER staff. * * *

On the surface this looks like Age Discrimination. It probably is, but COP is smart. They laid the cards (org charts) on the table. After identifying the OLDER staff to lay off, they determined how many YOUNGER positions they should "let go" to keep them out of trouble. From there, they identified people based on performance.

Add to all of that . . . COP keeps hiring, bringing in interns, and spending a ton of money to entertain them.

I don't think COP can really stop anyone from suing them or a class action suit.
