Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

GM tried to fire me for calling 911 for customer who stopped breathing

I had a customer in the copy center who collapsed on the floor and the husband was yelling for me to call 911. The customer stopped breathing. I called at once to get the ambulance in and minutes later my GM ( who was chatting in the parking lot with another manager) came in screaming at me because ...he claimed ...I needed his permission to call 911. When i told him there was no such policy he tried to send me home without pay. The other manager on duty called him out and said that no such policy exists. I was then told by the other manager, who was replacing my current GM that I did the right thing. Especially if that person stopped breathing. It's incidents like this that made me lose complete confidence in the management of Staples. It was a sign of the bad times I had there.

That manager who told you that you had to ask his permission to call 911 should not be a manager for any company. That guy sounds like a real asshole. He must be related to Ron Sargent,

Oh god no, don't call 911. Staples may be liable for a $500 ambulance bill if it is a false alert. Can't have that. This company makes the stupidest decisions ever.

This is for the guy or gal who said "I cannot believe this"...well it did happen and the idiot of a manager who said this is still with the company. It's idiot managers like this who drive out good employees and it's the reason Staples is in the shape it is today.

The worst part about it was my former GM loudly said...he "doesn't care if the customer dies" and employees and customers heard him in the store and he was called on the carpet for it. Nothing happened other than my life was hell until I quit.

You did the right thing. But, now your relationship with that bad manager is sour and you will suffer. That is a bummer. I wish you all the best.
