Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Our Store is closing May 23rd.

And ... two other stores in the Western WA area are closing as well. Customers have already received emails containing a $10 coupon starting May 23 for our other local stores and we are putting up the signs tomorrow or Sunday.

So, we've been told that we will get two weeks for every year of service. I will have been with Staples for close to 7 years, so I'm expecting 14 weeks of severance.

What else can we expect during this upcoming month? The playbook does not mention anything about clearance items save for K-Cups and chairs. Will we see an 50% off sales in the upcoming weeks? Or ... a progression of percentages off, i.e.: 20% off next week, 30% off the following week etc, etc, etc?

Will we be continuing to receive a supply truck till we close?

For those that have gone through the process of closing the store, please feel free to add any details as our crew is curious. TIA

Well, we are scheduled to pull out this Saturday. Store has been closed to the public for a week and they've pulled all our computers, telephone system, alarms, and the 3rd party crew is doing nicely in packaging up all remaining products to be shipped to Rialto, CA for redistribution.

Got three complaints about this situation. Last week, we got paid for the prior week, as usual, and received another payment for 20 hours for the current week. We all lost one shift for payment. Asked our acting GM to put in an E-Ticket, and he said he did. Hope it goes through.

As we have no telephone system to call in for status, I had to go in to find out WTH is going on with our severance packages @ 10AM and did not hear back till 4PM per the following.

As for our severance packages, we won't get them till tomorrow ... the day before the store is emptied and closed for good. We asked for the packages earlier and until I left a message with the DM and RM, did not hear anything till today, to where they will present them tomorrow. We were all on our toes saying ... WTF, considering corporate Knew of our closing months ago.

I just hope this clusterfuck is finished this week without any additional screw ups.. Good luck to all you other employees still employed, as word has it that once the ODD/OM sale goes through, another 1000 stores in the combined operation will be closed as well.

The three stores are Seattle (1339) Kent, WA and Olympia, WA. As for what;s happening in our store, we received a truck last week with 6 pallets, we will get another truck tomorrow and I've been told one last truck next week. I just gotta ask ... WTF? We are we still being resupplied when we close the doors on 05/23?

The clearance will go an additional 10% every week(with the exception of laptops and tablets). They will go down a little slower. You won't get aggressive with markdowns til the last week or two and then it still is only on display mdse. and then your mgr. can make the calls on whether to go lower. Your ET should be shut off soon if not already down and CPC email and online orders get shut down a couple weeks out too. Make the best of it and enjoy your last few weeks. The grass isn't always greener on the other side and I'd give anything to have my store and team back.

I closed my store In Feb. You will sell off all displays and any perishable products. Pretty much what goes clearance now will be all that goes clearance. Trucks should be cut off about 4 weeks out. You will inventory same as always just one week before closing and then when you close you will pack up everything without having to count anything. The process is pretty simple. If you just follow the closing playbook it can go pretty smooth. I was lucky enough to keep my entire crew and very few third party to do the pack up and we were done in less than 3 days. You will get your severance packages the last week and make sure they are signed and faxed in your last day of work. The max is 10 weeks. You will receive your regular paycheck AND your last weeks pay(40 hours) both on the Friday after close, You will then skip a week with no check and then the severance checks will start. Like I said, we closed in Feb. and I have had no issues with checks or Cobra. Hope this helped a little.Good luck.

The number of weeks calculation is different depending upon position. 10 for some 12 fro some 16 for some and even more for higher ups...

14 weeks severance? The max is 10 weeks. But it could be different for Stores vs SDO's.
