Classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. Marketing blasts out a bunch of last minute offers to drive store traffic the last week of the quarter, while at the same time RVPs and DMs are screaming at stores to CUT PAYROLL to come in line for labor for the quarter. So you end up with more traffic, yet no associates to help the customers. They need to cut the dead weight at corporate and give stores more payroll. Best buy, Target and Walmart all have overnight crews or early morning crews. Staples does not like to spend any payroll for off hours crews. They want everything done between open-closing hours, while at the same time focusing on customers. It does not work when you have skeleton crews of minimum wage employees. You end up with shoddy customer service and empty shelves.

You forgot one other thing it leads to, closed stores. That's their goal anyway.
