Thread regarding Heald College layoffs

Close to a deal

Harris' handlers and superiors (including Arne Duncan and Jerry Brown) are trying to get the sale done (her sister is advising Hilary, and she needs California fundraising $). I get that she is in a spot here. She saw a chance to pounce on an opportunity to bury Heald and build her reputation. That is fine for small-town and even statewide politics, but it does not play on the national stage. She is being given the chance to get out of this with some of her reputation intact, but it takes some maneuvering on all sides. She wants something that makes her appear "strong for the consumer," but she can't be seen as crushing dreams of students and costing the state thousands of jobs. I would expect a deal in the next day or two with very limited press coverage and a quiet "return to business." Man, politics is an ugly thing.

@625- Again, Heald was purchased by CCI. It's not like Heald decided to go steady with CCI. The schools themselves and the employees/students had no say who they were sold to. Your post insinuates that they did. I am not wearing glasses of any shade. I am sure that some people have less scruples than others at Heald, which is just part of human nature. However the majority of the faculty and staff are good, hard working people just trying to do their job.

You are arguing that KH has had no say in the sale, but that is not actually true-we all know it. Why isn't she pursuing litigation now with the actual offenders? Why will Jack Massimino walk away from this will all of his millions intact, while some Non Profit would be made to take on his responsibilities...? Anyone in his right mind would not accept that knowing what kind of crap is surfacing. By stating that she will pursue litigation with any buyer is in fact cock blocking any sale to any reasonable buyer.

In part, I am sure this is just a part of her political career aspirations. She gets to be Jack, the Giant Slayer saving the poverty stricken from the likes of For Profit Monsters.... I think she's doing it wrong though... She's coming across as an unrelenting bitch who does not care who gets killed in the cross fire. Or at least that what my circle sees when they look at this. And no-they do not work for or attend Heald.

@ripthebandaidoffalready, the point I was trying to make is that Heald had all the facts at their fingertips when they were purchased by CCI --it was a CHOICE they made. That choice came with really bad consequences-- CCI's For Profit Policies ruined Heald, which is not KH's fault. CCI has been accused of things and can win at trial IF they are innocent; however, the State of California has a right to have the allegations heard at trial. CCI can sell without KH signing off, but she is not going to release a new buyer from liability. I am not pointing fingers at anybody; I am saying take off the rose colored glasses--Heald is not the innocent, wounded party that some would have us believe. I am not mocking anybody either--I too have been severely impacted by this fiasco. I have given a huge part of my life to this school , and I am broken hearted.

@534 "she is effectively making such a sale extremely difficult if not impossible by maintaining the threat of future litigation." It is not future litigation; the litigation began in Oct. 2013. Discovery and Mandatory Mediation between CCI and the AG's office has been ongoing since then. In fact, there is a court date coming up--May 15.

This is one of the most intelligent threads I have seen on the LO. There are some sharp people at Corinthian. It seems to me that the OP is right here. Running for U.S. Senate is very serious stuff. While an AG or other state official can go on crusades, that is not how the Senate works. What does she do now? I don't know. I agree with OP that she probably wants an out here as much as anyone, but she has backed herself into a political corner. I agree that there will be a sale, but something low-key and with a press release that props up the AG office but keeps everyone else satisfied with the deal.

To say that Harris has no say in who is allowed to buy Heald is misleading. Other campuses and elements of CCI were sold by making a deal that future litigation would be waived for concessions pertaining to loans. What is happening here is that while she is not controlling who could buy the school, she is effectively making such a sale extremely difficult if not impossible by maintaining the threat of future litigation.

There are no "unreasonable stipulations to a possible sale," 424. A buyer has to assume risk of any litigation. Harris has absolutely no say in who is allowed to buy Heald. As for Prime and the Daughters of Charity, that's hardly analogous. In that case, the buyer didn't want to keep at least five of the six hospitals open for a decade. Who was the job killer there? Quit trying to make this about Harris. The federal government, several senators, and seven other attorneys general also have complaints, issues, or suits against CCi. Take responsibility!

To 291- "Heald joined CCI in 2010, so they would have received all of this information before closing the deal--and they still went ahead!" Ummm... Heald was purchased. They did not "join" CCI. I'd like to think they would have been more selective than to join the ranks of CCI willingly.

It sucks for students, faculty and staff alike that there is no news one way or another. You can point fingers and mock those who are left behind, but those are not the ones that caused this fiasco. And now they are all in limbo waiting to hear their fates...

Kamala Harris isn't being deemed a job killer just because of what she's done to CCI. She also closed down the Daughters of Charity hospitals by doing the same thing she's doing with CCI, imposing unreasonable stipulations to a possible sale. http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/2015/03/prime-healthcare-daughters-charity-kamala-harris.html?page=all

You think that a loss of around 750 in the entire state of California is going to be termed some sort of "job killing" situation? If it was in one city or county then it might be a bigger deal for the local government but, 750 in the entire state? Come on, CA loses more than that each day when small businesses shut down and farmers layoff workers because of lack of water. There is no deal forthcoming. Honestly, if there was the "buyer" would be using publicity to try and make their case stronger.

Contrary to popular belief, this did not start in June 2013 with AG Kamila Harris. CCI came under serious investigation back in 2004. Due to lots of dirty, political bribes, they were let off the hook. So, after promising to reform, they continued to do exactly what they had been doing in the first place. Then, In 2007, the current AG, Jerry Brown's office was about to file charges, suddenly DROPPED them the day before the lawsuit was filed, and settled with CCI. Hmm...why? Because he was BOUGHT by the lawyers for CCI--among other things, Jerry Brown's sister worked for the law firm representing CCI! Heald joined CCI in 2010, so they would have received all of this information before closing the deal--and they still went ahead! Now, it's very convenient to try and claim that the current AG is trying to assassinate Heald for political gain. It is also in the context of the AG office's ongoing investigation into for-profit institutions. There is a long list, which is as yet undisclosed while they are being investigated.

This article is a long, worthwhile read:

What the hell are you talking about? Nobody cares about Heald. It doesn't look good if a bunch of jobs are lost, but nobody is going to weep for Heald and our predatory tactics. We're tax frauds. Everybody here knows it. And all of this could have been avoided if Heald hadn't behaved criminally.
