Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

There are far too many politics played in the Canadian office

I know I use to hold a Supervisor position. I quit because of their 1-5 rating system. Why would staff try when they know they will be a 3 year after year. Only those who were "preferred" would received projects to make them stand out for a higher rating. It was not was best for the company, it's what have you done for me lately. Pit the staff against one another for those 1 and 2 ratings. It's all carp. The higher up management could veto my recommendation for a rating and I would not find out about it until it was a done deal. My opinion did not matter only those upstairs and staff were deflated when ratings would come out.

It does not matter how hard you try or perform.

Once you are #Painted# as a 3 you will forever be a 3.

Since there can only be so many 1 or 2 ratings that means someone needs to be placed as a 3 or lower.

Generally that person could be a good performer but not well liked by management.

Does this sound familiar??

Start playing golf with the Boss now and suck ass like there is no tomorrow.

Cheers.

Funny thing is a number of the people who were let go in the Canadian office were some of the BEST employees. I have no idea what COP Canada values in terms of employee skill set, but after witnessing what happened last week, I'm guessing it is something along the lines of 'low performers who are of no threat to their supervisors positions'

Forced rankings are disappointing.

Supervisors are also FORCED to pick a 4 or 5 rating to place on a percentage of employees depending on how big thie group is. I said that no one in the group deserved a rating of a 4 or 5 and it was a ridiculous conversation to choose an employee. We ended up picking based on the littlest points, dissecting everything they did or said. It was the same when it came to who deserved the 1 and 2. Then after all that energy it was never my decision in the end. Forced ratings is no way to encourage a healthy work place. So to all those that get the boot, take the money and run. Hold your head high and say good riddance. Don't let upper Managment tell you what your self worth is when it was allllllll made up.

You're right about Management changing ratings after direct supervision accesses their people directly for the whole year. I was a manager in CPC and had that very thing happen last year. The other thing that most employees don't know is that the ratings are done in November, long before each person has written their accomplishments and discussed their results with their supervisors. Your "3" has already been set in stone weeks or months before those conversations take place.
