Thread regarding Heald College layoffs

The 74186 story was moving. Are there any others who can share a story like this?

I know that Heald has changed the lives of tens, maybe hundreds of thousands by sticking to the core values of Curriculum, Competence, and Cooperation. Let's hear more stories so we can all see just how much good has been done over the past 150 years.

I have been reading through some very funny posts for the last 30 minutes (instead of working). I think people are missing a lot of the sarcastic stuff written. Like in the last couple. One poster mentions the DAA. Then, the other person mentions the DA and says corporate is solid on legal issues. How do people miss the joke?

@76265: You misreading DAA THREE times as DA tells me that 1) you've never worked for Heald so have no idea what you're talking about and clearly have no idea what I'M talking about and 2) are probably a student at Heald due to your reading comprehension.

So, 76265, if Heald corporate is so "rock solid on legal issues," why is the CA AG suing Heald (not CCI) for falsifying job-placement numbers, offering nonexistent programs and using military seals without authorization. If Heald were "rock solid on legal issues" these things would have never occurred, Heald would have been sold last year and everything would be fine. But that's is not the case, is it?

76234: Changing lives, changing grades....this is all just semantics, really. The point is that Heald was there, just like it has been for 150 years, and students are leaving with something tangible. I don't know why a faculty would be required to speak to the DA, but I would refer any legal questions to corporate. They are rock solid on legal issues.

A few years ago a teacher started working for Heald with the starry-eyed dream of being able to make a difference in the lives of the students... then he realized what kinds of students attended Heald and failed a few who missed over half of their classes and turned in horrible work (when they DID manage to turn in their work). This teacher was called in to speak to the DAA and told to pass those students. The teacher stared at the DAA with clear confusion in his eyes and said, "But they were barely in class and did not grasp enough of the concepts to meet the requirements. Plus they don't even know the difference between 'there', 'their' and 'they're'. The DAA said, 'We're here to make sure the students succeed.. (and that our graduation rates meet the Federal requirements)." The teacher left after one quarter... AFTER changing the grades of those students so they could pass and be shining examples of Heald's best.

Man, if I had a few hours, I could take about hundreds of students. They all had their goals met, their dreams fulfilled. If we could cover 150 years of this magic, I can only imagine what we would hear. Keep the faith alums. Heald will keep doing you all proud.

736, I think you mean 20 years ago. Heald has long ceased helping poor students. Those students are now simply a vehicle for bringing in money from the federal government. Those students with a thirst for knowledge have gotten the word on the street that Heald is not real. Cool story, though.

A few years ago, a student in tattered clothes came into a gleaming educational edifice. I wasn't Harvard, not even Ohio State, but for this future-thinking student, it may very well have been. She got left behind by the elites. She was told by some (maybe even some who post so condescendingly here) to work in fast food or to watch our for the dreaded "La Migra." Heald didn't see fear or failure. Heald saw the future, and once that student had her thirst for knowledge piqued, she worked towards that degree. I don't know what happened to her, but I bet it was something good, something big, something Heald.

I don't know whether a worker-centric coop would work because the money to pay them has got to come from somewhere. The corporate coop model employed by software boot camps is likely to be more successful.

If there is a core group of Heald people with ethics and skills, why not think about a worker-centered, student-centered cooperative?

Let's not. Let's grow up and take responsibility for our shady business practices and stop pretending like we don't deserve the beating we've been taking. More bullshit isn't going to save us.
