Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – Makenzie Vasquez never thought she would still be wearing a waitress uniform, two years after she enrolled to become a medical assistant.

“I am far worse off than I was before I went to school,” Vasquez told KPIX 5 ConsumerWatch.

Vasquez said pushy enrollment counselors at Everest College convinced her to borrow $30,000 to attend a nine-month program, a program that she said was a joke.

“I was getting taught by students who were there a week more than me,” Vasquez recalled.

Unable to pay a required monthly fee, Vasquez was kicked out, but the school kept her $30,000 in loans.

Two years later, Everest’s parent companyCorinthian Colleges is no longer in existence. The school was sued by both the state and the feds for predatory lending and false advertising to students like Makenzie, who still owe for an education they never received.

So they are refusing to pay. “We’re striking,” Vasquez said. “We’re not going to pay back the loans — and we understand the consequences.”

Vasquez is among the “Corinthian 15,” former students from across the country taking a stand and demanding their student loans be forgiven.

Suzanne Martindale of Consumers Union said while not paying a federal loan can have serious consequences, “They don’t have many options – so they’re taking it to the top.”

“The Department of Education is the steward of all this taxpayer money in the form of grants and federal student loans, and they’re the ones who have the authority to decide which schools are eligibleto receive that money. They’re also the ones with the authority to discharge those loans, I mean they own those loans,” Martindale told KPIX 5.

Since the tuition strike started, organizers say at least 80 more former Corinthian students have expressed interest in joining the tuition strike.

The Department of Education said it’s committed to upholding the rights of students who were taken advantage of, but advises borrowers to continue paying their student loans to avoid the “serious consequences of default.”

608 - Who does it say I am? Me and Sallie Mae are going to go make out in the corner while the nation burns. Me and my horse face enjoy giving federal dollars to corrupt companies to screw over teenagers and their parents for life. I live in Colorado and smoke doobies all day, and take bribes to keep those federal dollars flowing. My only med is some Jamaican herb bonged out of Seth Rogan's ass.

So this is what journalism has become. There was no fact checking done to this story or any of the ones Camden Kid gives links to. Just because someone says it do want make it true. Her story is an outright fabrication. Understand the FA process so you can fact check the story.

Does Ms. Vasquez even know what the term "loan" means? Why would the school forgive your $30,000 in loans if you didn't finish? They are LOANS, not GRANTS! Idiots.

726 - Learn some fing math then you dumbass. You think the money comes from nowhere? You lazy moochers working for CCI only get paid if the students actually find jobs that pay enough to both survive and funnel anything to your worthless pile of shit loans. If they can't survive, you won't get anything either - why is that so hard for you dumb fs to comprehend? You won't get free dollars forever from the federal government, yet that is precisely the attitude all of you seem to have. You guys like to whine about accountability, how about showing some yourself for cutting corners and not actually providing shit for education, and having a garbage reputation that directly led to students who actually tried to still get absolutely nothing from your toilet paper degrees?

Makenzie makes LaTonya look like a sophisticated woman in comparison. That's quite a feat.

I want to make IT CLEAR that no Everest program costs nearly that much

I want to make sure that no Everest program costs nearly that much, and nobody "convinced" her to stop working and live off taxpayer provided loans. The student decided she was tired of working and took a few months off. had her instructor been there "only a week" more than she? Of course not. Even though the curriculum is at no more than a 6th grade level, this student either couldn't get it or didn't bother to try. The other student would have been a tutor volunteering to provide her with extra help. Apparently she still flunked out. Kicked out because she didn't pay a fee? BS! She is saying that she has loans (which are on top of Pell, SEOG, CalGrant and all the other free money) of $30K. That means she had all of her school expenses covered and actually received tens of thousands in stipend checks to live on. There were no fees. This is just another lying, lazy idiot trying to scam the system. And the hardworking taxpayers.

Camden Kid - for the last time. GO AWAY! You are getting really annoying at this point and we will start to humiliate you if you keep this up. And, as you know, your life is pretty much everything those who hate you hoped it would be, down to your Mom's basement (or at least almost that low).

I paid 30,000 and I went to school once a week for nine months. I figured my certificate would get me work so I did not bother to learn anything.. Even though 30,000 is less than the car I drive my life is ruined!

This story doesn't even make sense, so it's clearly exaggerated to make the school look bad. First off, no 9 month MA program costs 30k. Secondly, if she was kicked out of school she's only responsible for the time she actually spent in school. Unless she made it to the very end and then got kicked out, which means she's an idiot for not doing what she needs to do to actually finish her program. A school can only help you so much. At some point people need to take responsibility and realize you have to work hard in life to get ahead. Nothing is just handed to you and it sure as hell isn't free.

So tired of this of this bs. No one wants to be accountable for themselves anymore. It is always someone else's fault for whatever reason. I guess then half of the U.S. college graduates should say f' it we aren't paying either. Get over your sense of entitlement and work like the rest of us. If it was easy it wouldn't be called work. Do your research and be a responsible consumer.

Oh please! Firstly no ma profeam costs that much. Second of all she didn't pay her bills from the begining. That is said why she was dismissed. This is only ethical to stop accumulating more debt. She needs to stay a waitdress. No short cuts to money. Just hard work. Don't let these lawyers exploit you
