Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

268 hours?

So our store was cut to only 268 associate hours a week. I suspect many more of you are in the same boat. So is this just Staples intentionally pushing these stores to closure? Certainly looks to me like they are setting us to fail.

We've been getting 240 for about six months now, it's nuts.

Tell me about it last week they gave my store 228 hours and that was with my expiring banks. Staples is a fing joke. I have now worked for staples for seven years and 2 as a gm its gone from good to bad this is insane what they expect us to do. The monkeys in the fing suits should come try and run my store off 228 hours and see how they hold up even with their millions of dollars a year they would fail in a heartbeat!!! F*** All OF YOU MONKEYS UP IN CORPORATE MAking these dumbass decisions

Your store is pretty lucky with 268. My store only gets about 240 a week.

You have to look at the long-range retail strategy, which has been described as eventually transitioning to much smaller stores. Should the FTC approve the Staples/Office Max merger, the combined company is going to still be sitting on a lot of leased retail store real estate between the two companies, in many cases geographically overlapping in terms of density. Downsizing on expense across the board and particularly on the retail end while growing the online business is the overarching strategy. Taking all of that into account, if as an associate you're on the retail end, it's definitely not a secure place to be.

That is within the range of a tier 4 store. I can't say that it would make you a direct target for closure because many stores are close to that in hours. They do seem to be setting stores up to fail though. They want long term managers out, either by making the situation impossible and stressing them out until they quit, or store conditions and metrics are bad enough for write ups / PiPs and they can fire them.
