I am a faculty member and can not log onto email all of a sudden....is this an ominous sign?

Go to the webmail site. If you can sign up there then you are fine and just the VPN is down. If you are let go, it will say "email has been disabled". That's what happened to me on a Friday and on Monday morning I got the call from HR.
