Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

When are they anouncing layoffs

Has anyone heard anything about more layoffs. Need to know if I will have a job to feed my family. Going through enough stress with all the pressure from the DM to make store perfect, but the uncertainty is making it worse. Where is staples going with this? Am I suffering through this for nothing. Managers from other stores are leaving in droves because of the fear of not being able to support their families when the axe falls. Is there any real information out there? It's anonymous so please we just want to know so we can make decisions.

I'd just like to piggyback on what others have said, in that as a Staples employee, you are looked upon as a number. I know of what I speak. Your local management that you deal with day-to-day might value you, but your local managers don't have any say or impact on the mass layoffs. Those decisions are made at the national level, and believe me when I say you are little more than your employee id number: easily deleted. If you work in the transportation end of the business, you already know your days are numbered, even if your operation isn't already scheduled to be closed. You might make it through 2015, but if you think you have a lengthy future in that area of the business, you're just deluding yourself. If you're in the retail end, well, look at how many stores have closed or downsized already, and this is just the BEGINNING of the retail downsizing. A Depot merger isn't going to change the long-term plans of the company, which boil down to small stores with few employees (working at minimum wage part time) and an emphasis placed on online ordering and business-to-business accounts (delivered by 3rd party couriers). This isn't speculation. The company has explicitly said this is their game plan. Maybe if you work in a fulfillment center you have less to worry about than if you're in transportation or retail. Otherwise, you really need to AT THE VERY LEAST start looking at what else is out there for employment opportunities and start researching how to file unemployment claims, if your state has mortgage deferment plans and laws in place for people unemployed through no reason of their own...don't be caught by surprise. Yes, it sucks that the company is laying off so many people, but don't wallow too long in anxiety over wondering IF it might happen to you. Be prepared.

"Working over 10 years here and this is what they do?" This is exactly what the do.... They do not want experienced managers that make a decent amount. They do not see a person with a family and a mortgage. All the see is $$. With a 10+ yr person gone, that is about 12 weeks of severance they do not have to pay when they downsize managers again or close your store.

Don't wait for them.......get your resume out there....every company out there. Is aware of staples and layoffs and cuts...make it a priority to make the change. You might make it through the first cut,but you know you might be on the next list, it's just a matter of time, so spend your time wisely. I'm sorry for being so blunt but I did it myself with my kids also..you can do it!!!your worth more than the stress you bring home!!!

Is this legal? How can they do that to us? Working over 10 years here and this is what they do? How will I support my family? Especially if they deny my unemployment. I'll loose our home. How can they be that cruel, I have small children. My husband passed it's just me. I'll loose everything.

Layoffs? They would not be that kind. The new thing is to apply so much stress to store teams that managers quit. Then there are the constant write ups and PIPs for those that don't quit. Layoffs usually require severance and unemployment payouts. Working people to the breaking point and making them quit or firing them for "cause" does not require severance and they will fight to deny unemployment. This is a real and very active initiative. I have seen more managers quit or get fired (not including downsizing layoffs) in the last year that in all my time in that place.
