I was laid off from GULF back in 1986. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I worked for many years with SMALL oil companies and made millions and retired at 54. The moral - get your ass out of the BIG company and start making REAL money at a SMALL independent !

Luckily I was able to work this boom as a consultant long enough to save some money. The first hit I took with Baker was in 1986...and had been in the patch only about 5 yrs. before it hit. Promised myself then when it came back I would save and save...for the next bust. I'm just thankful it lasted long enough for me to become a bit secure financially. It's going to be tough on the young'uns that only have a few years in and are experiencing this bust. Count it as a lesson. Lose everything and start over. The next boom will hopefully last a while and allow everyone to save for the bust after that.
Ya I managed to pick up a job at McDonald's for 7.56 an hour from 8 to 5 then I work at Target for 3 hrs. Almost make what I made delivering bits.
Left Baker to be a consultant for the last 7 yrs. Saved a million...gonna just sit out this downturn and do a lot of fishing!
