Thread regarding Saudi Aramco layoffs

Enormous layoffs incoming… again

According to management there are large structural plans in motion to spilt up the upstream business.

A separate gas business will be created, those in the wrong place will be let go.

Expats 55+ and those remaining on US payrolls are top of list for dispatch. It’s enormous. Be ready..

That “expat” dream is dead. Word’s been out for a few years now.
Still a step up from the third world though.

They can’t publish such as management lose face and the “expat dream” peddled by PR would be exposed. It’s definitely the strategy though, cut fixed costs to the bone, starting with expats as they are easier to dispose of.

The problem is if the wrong organs are removed (e.g. by inexperienced/incompetent practitioners) it will ki-l the patient.

Whether they publish a notice or not, I have no doubt that strategy is being implemented.

They should put all US Expats on notice that the Company can no longer support their expensive pay and benefits packages. In today’s world economy, sourcing of the lower-cost, highly-educated labor pool from India makes sense. The Company now answers to the shareholders. Increasing efficiencies and lowering costs can only boost Company stock prices and profits.

Layoffs are good for the Company and the Kingdom.

Why fire expat employees and hire expensive contractors & consultants?
Management gets a kickback from the companies they hire or JV's they create. The only thing they care about is their own stash of cash.

Any notion you have of logic should be discarded once you land.

When is this expected to happen?

It makes no business sense and is almost certainly counter productive on any normal metric. It’s value destruction, probably in the billions.

Thing is nobody cares. Large strategy consultancies tell locals what they want to hear and validate such approaches while making serious buck. Some would call this a corrupt practice.

So in aramco world this all meets an internal KPI, is seen as some evolution, and allows a local tribe head to create an empire.

How does it make sense to save $ by letting go of (mostly) loyal and competent employees, only to replace them with external consultants that cost $$$.

We are always hearing about layoffs at Aramco. Do any layoffs of significance ever occur?

Not surprised, especially given the World Cup announcement. More projects, that will become more behind, leading to more $$ squeeze on Aramco.
