One of my former teammates who was laid off in the last round never had anything but stellar reviews and was always praised as one of the best employees on the team - with good reason. If he was laid off without a second thought, then it really is true that nobody is safe and that job security is a thing of the past.

If you want job security get out of tech. If you want unconditional love get a dog. If you want to buy a home don't live in CA. Brush your teeth, wash behind your ears, grow up.
Agree with the security element. But whatever the exec’s are doing isn’t hurting the stock price (yet) so the koolaid production and forced consumption will continue until it does. I thought this would have been years ago but ge-z the market results don’t agree with me.
Name any corp company post Y2K that offers job security. The days of retirement plans & retiring from a company after 20 yrs are long gone. The days of getting a gold watch at the end are also gone. Most people are lucky to get 10 yrs at a company now. If you’re staying more than 3-5 yrs, you’re missing out on pay raises & promotions. Unless you have that secret special something that will let you climb the ranks from IC to Mgr to Sr Mgr to Dir to VP to SVP & maybe ELT, then it’s best to jump around.

Oh, there’s intelligence behind the choices. They look at a spreadsheet of costs, ask if anyone can even remotely do what the most expensive do, & if the answer is yes, then they go on the LR list. If the answer is no, they’re encouraged to hire someone cheaper who can as they replace the next most expensive people who did make the list so that they can be cut the next round.
It’s not a smart plan, & only looks at the short term gains, but it’s thought out.
You have a job for six months…. Start thinking like that if you get past a LR and prepare urself for another job during that period… ELT is broken and can’t be fixed
Cisco let go of so much great talent in the last layoff (November). I personally know a few super talented (but older 😊) folks who landed amazing jobs right away! Good for them and companies that hired them.
If you are under 30 with an engineering degree you are fine it seems.
But oh no, over 35? No IT coding skills? PM? EA?

Another genius figuring out what has been happening in industry for 40 years. In another 20 years you'll discover that Cisco encouraged people in the US to move to India for 20% of their current salary. You'll learn of wage freezes, dry promotions and rank-and-yank. You'll learn a few years later that an executive in an all hands announced they wanted the average age of an engineer to be 25. Since they come out of university around 22 that means they'd be over the hill by 29. You'll learn of all manner of ethics code violations while watching the managers responsible for enforcing it laugh and laugh and laugh about it. I don't want to ruin all the surprises but know there are many more ways that employees have been abused for you to discover.

Cisco showed a lot of talent the door last layoff. Baffling, but good for the competition.
Used to be employee performance related but apparently no longer; it's just random.
