What exactly is this role, and why is he still in it? What has he contributed ?

Likely we were running out of CIO spots - so they needed to add another. BTW - how many are we are at now? (and one wonders why we cant standardize technology....)
AI only good for processing data models as well as user experience.
There is not a single team I know of that is good and genuinely making a difference using AI. This is the legacy of old leadership selling AI snake oil. Doing AI right needs courage to challenge old mindsets that are ingrained in the Company culture. Instead, what we see are hundreds of minor projects costing many hundreds of millions with not much to show for it.
I think it’s not just AI leadership that needs a shake up. Tech and business leaders - all of them need to be rotated out.
Hope the placement of more teams under him is temporary. The AI Reset is still being figured out and I won't be surprised if it turns out to be a still birth. Fidelity doesn't know how to do AI.
It looks like more teams have been placed under him. There is a definite lack of good leaders in the company. I see the same people moving around up top. Nothing will change. The bottom people will continue to be squeezed and the same top will skim off the cream. Pretty much like any company, anywhere. Fidelity is no different.
He was downgraded long ago and enjoying his retirement years with perks. When he was leading the team in his previous role, he showed good progress in few areas at one point in time so this could be the result of that. Despite his departure from his last role, there has been little noticeable improvement in his previous team's performance. His successor seems to be following in his footsteps, exhibiting similar shortcomings and perpetuating a culture of favoritism. This has led to a consistent decline in leadership quality within this organizational unit.
Higher-level employees (L8s & L9s) demonstrate a high degree of insecurity and contribute minimally to the team's success. They primarily focus on processing work delegated by others, offering little in the way of strategic guidance or value-added contributions. Additionally, some female leaders in this area display concerning and problematic attitudes.
The overall leadership within this unit is extremely weak, resulting in an excessive workload and significant burden being placed on lower-level employees.
It's a ceremonial role for the disposed guy to leave Fidelity voluntarily. Yet that guy seems to determined not to leave until being dragged out of the door.
A Frankenstein mixture of MBA, brownnoser of Indian origin and superb capability to manage up, he managed to have Abby's ears for many many years, wasted tons of Fidelity money along the way, and delivered not much business value, leading to his demise in the PI split.
