Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Is SAS good for interns?

Trying to decide if I should join SAS as an intern? Is it a prefered company to intern at?

It's generally a really good place to intern. If you're in R&D, you'll get good experience with reasonable expectations. If you choose to stay for full-time or go elsewhere after, that's up to you.

Another thing is that they offer some interns the opportunity to work part-time throughout their school year if they want to earn a bit more money. Don't have to take it, but it can be nice

I also saw bright interns leave SAS, for FAANGs and other companies.

An internship at Google is better. But an internship at SAS is not a bad start at all.

Interns are young. If SAS sells, or IPOs, it doesn’t affect them. The main thing an intern needs is experience, and SAS provides that.

I once worked on some “leading edge” stuff at all SAS. There were some super smart interns inserted into pockets of our organization (no this was not the UI design project staffed mostly by interns that the “photographer” established). Most of these same interns now work or have worked at FAANG companies as full-time employees. YMMV.

Amazing all the negative comments. SAS internships are actually hard to come by and highly competitive. So what if it's looking to sell or IPO?! Do you know how many companies have done that. This won't be the first or the last one to. There are several places I used to work at that have merged, been acquired or flat out don't exist anymore. You're making it seem like it's the end of the world. I've been at FAANG as well - you may think the grass is greener with those names, but it is truly all the same. Take the internship. They actually have a thoughtful and intentional program for interns. Plus, if experience is what you need, SAS will give you that. To the people being debby downers and no longer at the company. It gave you the experience you needed to be where you are today. Why deny someone else the opportunity to do the same because you're holding some sort or resentment. Move on, and let someone who actually wants to be here, be here.

Some of you act like everyone gets internships at Microsoft/Google/Meta/Nvda/Apple.
Most don't.

There is a universe of other companies out there all of which have pros/cons.
Get off your FAANG high horses.

Interning at SAS will be a great experience. You will learn far more than "what not to do". That is a lesson that can be learned at any company you work for.

If you have multiple offers then choose between them. Simple as that.

If nothing else, you'll get experience on how not to do things.

@1oxz+1w3G4kg7 gives good advice. SAS revenues are declining, relative to costs. This causes layoffs, nearly 20% over the past 10 years. Of course it’s better to join a growing company than a shrinking one.

The other point is also valid. The main thing an intern needs is experience, and SAS treats its interns well. So if you don’t get an internship at Microsoft or Google, SAS is a solid choice.

“ Some people here will tell you that SAS is no different than any other company in this regard, but they are wrong.”

I love people that make an “argument” and then agree with themselves and feel the need to state everyone else is wrong, Such people are not to be listened to. Doesn’t matter whether they right or wrong.

Not if you have options. SAS is dying and the company is currently being managed into the ground. Some people here will tell you that SAS is no different than any other company in this regard, but they are wrong. SAS culture was unique, very tolerant, and collegial, but the market which enabled that culture is gone. The resulting decline gives rise to problems that a historically publicly-traded company like Microsoft or Facebook doesn't have.

You're better off with one of those company's experience on your resume. But if you have no other options, some experience is better than none.

If the goal for internship is to get your foot in the door to better your chances of eventually becoming a SAS full time employee, I would not consider SAS a good choice. Why? The company is not growing, it is shrinking. It is for sale or IPO and with that comes high uncertainty for employees. Pains me to say this but t is a totally different company than what it used to be and is sadly declining more and more I hate that. Had nearly 30 great years there and relieved to be gone cause it became like watching a loved one dying .

Good luck to you wherever you do your internship.

“ Yes, especially if you report to one of your parents.”

Yeah like that happens

depends a lot on your manager / group, but would definitely recommend (all the negativity on here about layoffs or IPO predictions won't apply to you if you only work there for a summer or two, and the experience will boost your resume and talking points). of course, it's all relative to any other offers you may or may not have.

You'll get a lot of negativity here but it is a perfectly good place to intern at. Anywhere that gets you experience on your resume is good.

Having a mid->big sized company like SAS will certainly not hurt you.
