Thread regarding Alteryx layoffs

Layoffs are underway. Cruel timing.

Engineers are posting their goodbyes on LinkedIn. 😔

C++ is not really at fault. It's the engineers who do not want to learn, or cannot learn anything new. A majority of them just happen to be C++ engineers at Alteryx.

There are also problematic engineers at Alteryx in the realm of JS/Python. I would choose a C++ engineer over them any day. Some are barely functional boot-campers.

Anyone reading this, gtfo now. Engineering culture is cooked.

Guess I was sold on a different story, but it’s on me for not digging deeper beforehand.

The best advice I can give you is to GET OUT while the getting is good. You made a clear mistake coming to Alteryx. You can reverse that mistake quickly, without permanent harm to your career, by getting out as soon as you can. Find another job with a better company.

You will regret your decision to come to Alteryx. It's just a matter of time. Take control of your career, own your mistake, and get out as fast as you can.

Yes, really, C++ Windows programmer. Where have you been hiding?

Sorry -- I’m not in programming or development. I just joined recently, and things feel a bit off. Guess I was sold on a different story, but it’s on me for not digging deeper beforehand.

Yes, really, C++ Windows programmer.

Where have you been hiding? Pull your head out of the sand.

Better yet, try interviewing at a FAANGplua company and report back here where they place you.

If you are an engineer at Alteryx, expect to get down-leveled by 2-3 levels at a FAANG or FAANG-lite company. Your skills are 10 years out of date.

Really?

It is what it is.

You can get around this by excellent story telling. However if you possess this skill, you are likely already at another company, or making over 350k at Alteryx (Colorado).

I was down-leveled due to my lack of experience in a certain area Alteryx doesn’t have; informed in a post interview meeting with a manager.

Many ex-employees recount similar experiences, which rather explains why the average tenure at Alteryx tends to be around 12 to 18 months.

Engineer here confirming. I am a strong L4 to mid L5 on FAANG interviews. I landed an offer at a an adjacent company. I was down-leveled due to my lack of experience in a certain area Alteryx doesn’t have; informed in a post interview meeting with a manager. Strong signals in coding and systems design.

Most engineers treat systems as a black box with no regard for consistency and consensus. Basically below the bar for L4. A lot of them are lead+ titles.

The hardest part of working at Alteryx is driving consensus on an approach. Nothing technical, all people skills.

Did Marketing wrap up that project about our slumping stats and decreasing fame?

The results will SHOCK you.

I think the poster was probably referencing the Brand and Comms team broadly.

Alteryx does seem to be surviving OK with a skeleton marketing crew though. it means that people have to actually WORK, PRIORITIZE and MAKE DECISIONS.

And don't even get me started, particularly about Marketing (content, brand, comms, and so forth).

So, the whole old brand crew's at Genesys now, right? Did Marketing wrap up that project about our slumping stats and decreasing fame?

Not fair to throw shade at Content. There's nobody there.

Quite typical, isn’t it? Alteryx seems to be the sort of place where you can land a Senior Manager or Director role with just 1-2 years of experience in the field.

One thing that is quite telling......how many former Alteryx technical employees now work for ANY of the FAANG or FAANG junior companies?

The answer to that should tell you about the technical competence and abilities of Alteryx "engineers"

And don't even get me started, particularly about Marketing (content, brand, comms, and so forth).

Bottom line -- it's business; it's not personal.

Oh, absolutely, it's just business, not personal at all. Just like how you'd disown your own mother over a 0.5% profit drop.

This is what happens when you have people with out of date skills (which is very typical at Alteryx), trying to learn on the job and become something they don't have the capability to do.

These two AI/ML folks getting pushed out is simply a case of them being WAY over their skis in terms of their actual skills, and the skills that are needed to move this part of the product forward. There was not enough forward movement in the product from these individuals, as compared to a more skilled engineer.

This is what happens when you have people with out of date skills (which is very typical at Alteryx), trying to learn on the job and become something they don't have the capability to do.

It's short-term pain as far as these individuals are concerned, and I wish them well. But they are not what/who we needed for the business, especially with the level of urgency that we have right now to move faster.

Bottom line -- it's business; it's not personal.

These were isolated changes made by a new leader in his org. He plans to hire experienced cloud AI/ML engineers with those reqs.

She was with the company for nearly four years and got promoted twice. What requirements was she missing that it took that long to realise?

C'mon.

“It su-ks, but it’s not a sign of bigger layoffs. Only 2 people were affected.”

Such a callous statement, I bet you would be saying that if you were one of the “only 2” people to get laid off. Eff off dawg!

To clarify are these suprise layoffs, or are these the engineers who were on retainer and knew they were getting let go at this time?

What a move—laying off someone just three months after promoting them.

These are your so-called "discount wins"—a title change today, a layoff tomorrow.
