Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Executives have bought into the great AI Lie

It’s clear that the ELT and functional leadership teams have bought into the hype that AI is going to facilitate major staff reductions. If you’ve tried to use AI for anything even remotely complex, you know that reality doesn’t match the hype. But leaders are afraid to admit the emperors not wearing any clothes lest they be on the chopping block too.

This AI bubble can’t burst quickly enough. Hopefully before too many lose jobs.

Only half of the stuff that the AI team works on is even real AI. Most of it is just basic analytics stuff. MN and BK scrutinized their sh!t on a weekly basis. Not sure that’s what they should be focusing on, but it is what it is.

Chevron management is always looking for the "magic wand" that will compensate for bloated and sloth-like performance.

Correct, the ask isn’t to figure out how to use AI on the most complex things. The ask isn’t to figure out high value opportunities to leverage AI. Usually the higher value workflows involve a lot of complex analysis that AI is not able to do. Using it on the menial tasks might free up a few hours each week for someone but that’s not a needle mover to use MNs phrase. If we could get rid of 3 layers of review and approval it would return more value than AI

OP, I don’t know what BU you work for but there’s no executive at Chevron who is asking you to figure out how to use AI on the most complex things. A lot of it is for some productivity increases and if you go attend any of the enterprise AI team or any of the ML work on the digital platforms data science teams, there’s nobody trying to replace complex things with it.

Tell us which executive is bought into this AI hype that you’re talking about… and I am sure that people closest to the action can explain what they’re actually doing.

OP here. Not a petrotech. In a position where I’ve been told to find opportunities to leverage AI in our Business Unit, Microsoft telling our leaders that there’s opportunities everywhere but every time we dig in on the use case it falls apart and can only reliably do the most basic aspects.

Petrotechs spending their life working in spreadsheets and powerbi thinking, "another round of descriptive statistics for me please, I still haven't had my fill" now discussing AI and whether or not it is a scam. Choo choo, the engine for you!

SK was not a GM—I really hope she didn’t believe she was. She reported to a GM, but the ineffective EN repurposed her predecessors job title to make it a GM for the purposes of external hiring. She might now be a VP at Weatherford, but that doesn’t carry much weight as that could just be an IT manager for all we know.

There seems to be a lot of criticism directed at SK & EN on here. Personally, I never interacted with SK. If she was as ineffective as EN, then move on and take comfort in the fact that she has already left along with EN and won’t be occupying a seat when senior leadership finally decides to be transparent about whatever changes are coming.

AI is like Ozempic for executives. It’s a sheet for them to cut costs, just like Ozempic is a cheat to lose weight.

As one of the last old farts still standing, I remember hearing about how workstations were going to greatly decrease the need for petrotechs. Yet here I sit still staring at the flipping hourglass and collecting my big paycheck.

Speaking of AI Lies, how about that ole GM of Data Strategy moving over to Weatherford to be their VP of AI! Maybe we just didn’t see the talent and she would’ve done a better job than SB.

OP, please tell us how you define AI. What complex task are you talking about? No executive in exploration or asset development is asking AI to replace the real SMEs.

Agree that if they “bought into the AI hype”, there wouldn’t be this move of petrotech workflows to india. They’d just try to replace it completely with AI. But they’re not.

Sit back down and cry about something else.

This is a stupid post. If the executives were REALLY bought into the AI hype, there would not be this big focus on ENGINE.

It can do many things but it can’t do some of the complex things, sure. But it’s a good thing that at least some of the executives know a lot more about AI than the OP

This post was written by a Petro tech with a King ranch paying $1200/mo realizing that his job isnt as complicated and safe as it once was. The gravy train has broken down, permanently.
