Viasat Acquired Inmarsat for $7.3 Billion and now Viasat's market cap is $1.26 Billion.
$6 Billion just disappeared and many investors including employees with RSUs and stocks from the employee purchase program got f*cked.
From $50 down to $8. Paid $2,700 in taxes when they vested and now the stock is barely wort $1,200. And guess what? From what I understand you can only write off $3,000 in losses per year from stock grants.
Now I get why some say sell as soon as you get the RSUs and NEVER, EVER buy company stock in ESPP.
I think most employees don’t sell the stock. They thought Viasat would become the next Qualcomm, a $100 billion company. How wrong they were.
Generally it’s a poor idea not to diversify your investments. Don’t have your pension dependent on the company that pays you and thru which you pay your bills.
It’s not a loyalty test !
That’s why I always sell any company stock ASAP and put the money into something better. The stock performance doesn’t matter much if you sell at market open right when you get it. It just su-ks if you forget to do it and are a few hours late. The price usually goes down pretty significantly the day that people get the match and I suspect that it’s because all the employees are selling
