If the market makes a turn soon, do you think there will be General Motors layoffs? Any chatter, news or rumors?

The SLT has determined that engineering is an optional activity at GM and an unnecessary expense.

More funding has been allocated to management to compensate.

Carry on.

Do you actually think the stack rankings are objective, or merit based?

The boss just ranks employees by how much he likes them.

"They don't save "the good employees," unless they're politically connected."

That may have been true in the past, but stacked rankings now exist for a reason. We should be celebrating stacked rankings for this reason alone. People will not be broad-brushed out the door if they are worth their salt. I'm hoping the rankings are actually performance based and not a DEI scorecard with a bit of performance sprinkled in.

"When GM eliminates whole departments"

Which department? Engineering? Marketing? Accounting? When have they ever gotten rid of an entire department? How would that work??? SMH

When GM eliminates whole departments or projects they usually get rid of everybody.

They don't save "the good employees," unless they're politically connected. Somebody's buddy.

I suspect GM started the stacked performance ranking for this very reason. They’ll have a thorough paper trail of peoples performance and know who is rated lowest. Wouldn’t be shocked if some of those rated lowest are let go.

"getting rid of anyone that isn’t working on vehicles that make a profit"

Correction from someone on the inside: This is not necessarily true. Some of the best people are working on "experimental", military, EV, autonomous and other things I can't mention here. Those people will bump out the lower performers on the truck programs. The people who are bumped will be re-calibrated.

The truth is, GM is a multinational company that can pull in cars from other markets and use labor (including IT, marketing, accounting, etc) that is a fraction in cost. Look to seeing people in all departments replaced by people in Brazil, India, Mexico and China.

The people big-stuffing it here about having leverage as a senior employee, doing half the work load and refusing to come in are all about to find out... and I'm done trying to warn them.

Layoffs are inevitable. SLT has packed their golden parachutes but haven’t yet reached the required altitude to jump. A merger with the likes of Apple never materialized so they will settle for a private equity buyout and then pull the rip cord. The Bob’s will then sit down with all the directors to Ctrl-X their way through the org chart getting rid of anyone that isn’t working on vehicles that make a profit - and there won’t be a thing you or your boss that likes you can do about it. Nothing big will happen until January. Until then, they will squeeze everything they can out of everyone before letting them go.

If you have a marketable skill outside of GM, you have nothing to worry about.

Be patient. We are at the end of an economic cycle. Once the profits decline, and they certainly will due to a very flawed product plan... you will see thousands depart from GM, it's competitors and it's suppliers.

Don't listen to the rumors. Watch the quarterly results. GM is doing great right now. That gives you time to save your money, brush up on your skill-set and get your affairs in order. Be prepared, not scared!

Now is a good time to pay things off, buy things you may need if you do get laid off (car repairs, new clothes & shoes, tools) and save some emergency money. This might seem obvious to some, but during the last downturn, many lost their homes, cars, etc. because there were so few jobs. Don't end up like that if you can help it!
