EMHC Update

My supervisor is hinting at my next assignment being at EMHC. I haven’t worked there for several years. Is the neighborhoods really as bad as I think it will be? I am dreading going back to campus.

As another poster mentioned, most people just choose a desk and sit there permanently. No one cares about the neighborhood sideshow. As for desk space, really depends on your group and building. Some groups in the business are overcrowded and some groups in EMTEC have massive amounts of open chairs because of the massive offshoring of EMTEC positions.

Campus is showing its age. Buildings need more OPEX to keep them clean and maintained. How much time is spent cleaning each square foot of DWs office compared to our spaces?

Cubes are supposed to be cleaned and vacuumed 2x week, but is clearly not happening. Same food crumbs seen sitting on the floor days later. Colleagues all eat lunch and snacks daily at their shared cubes, but cubes not cleaned often so things get gross. All the shared huddle rooms have crumbs, hair and coffee stains all over the desks, so again it’s very clear they are not being cleaned regularly. You have to fill out a housekeeping ticket to get rooms cleaned. Would be happy to at least have some cleaning wipes available in huddle rooms but made available, and of course there are no trash cans to put them in so they would end up left on the tables or floor.

I know that rationing cleaning services and eliminating trash cans was a great idea to survive when COVID hit, but we are back on our feet again…so seems like it’s time to reconsider what most professionals would expect as basic necessities in a high density office environment.

Anyone else seeing the same thing in their building with respect to basic cleaning not happening?

I find campus to be rather nice. The food is pretty good and there are lots of options! It’s fun to treat myself every now and then to “eating out” for lunch instead of bringing my own- and I don’t have to leave the office!

I dreaded neighborhoods but they needed up not being awful at all. People gravitate towards preferred desks/areas over time. Like attending a new church, at first you may accidentally sit in someone’s pew, but over time you’ll find your own spot. I like the flexibility.

I did move to another location last year so I haven’t been on campus since they started cracking down on WFH. No comment there, but I visited campus recently and was excited to see even more food options, and more people! Campus was looking more full and lively than it has since 2019!

It’s easy to grumble and complain but honestly working at XOM hq is a dream.

It's fine. The food su-ks and is overpriced at EMHC, but the open environment can be quite constructive if used to your advantage. There are huddle rooms, focus rooms, coffee bar areas, and even other buildings if you want a change of scenery to work. Most people anchor to a desk pending your work group size as it is. I haven't heard anyone complain about it in person... only this website.

You will make an enemy as soon as you start sitting at a desk that someone has been using constantly for the past year.

You will need to keep your guard up and protect yourself from competitive coworkers.

Network quickly and strategically because on campus it is more important who you know than what you know. This explains how complete id--ts thrive.

Quickly assess if you have been placed into your new group to be their PIP sacrifice. If you suspect this, get transferred or look for another job to prepare for that NSI ranking.

If your job can be done remotely, assess if there is possibility of replacing you with cheap low quality BTC person. See above about looking for another job and plan for NSI false ranking even though you have more knowledge and ability than the person giving you that NSI talk.
