They do talk about Operating Ratio. It's right there in the UPOnline article about 3rd Quarter earnings.

Vena has about 4 months left; he will sell a minimum of 500 miles of trackage rights someway somehow. The managers can barely understand rules, not to mention, 99% of the managers graduated from an online school, if not a school that has no merits.

Their focus and determination on the low OR is what got them into trouble! The UP was warned many times over about pursuing the low OR, and still went for it anyways. As the warnings accurately predicted, they blew it! Now the only real person left that pushed hard for PSR and the unrealistic OR is Vena. He's got to be a little uncomfortable right now. The stock price has fallen quite far this last week, and the shareholders are starting to get mad at him.

They have to account for the paid-out lawsuits in the ratio, which drives it to the moon. I don't know the exact numbers, but they pay out a little over a billion dollars a year in all types of lawsuits. Then after they settle, they relocate the manager and fire them. We really need a tv show on working here, this is by far the d-mbest set of managers and staff.
