Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

How are you doing with your job search?

With the exception of some very specialized skills, having a Xerox on a resume has proven more of a burden than the advantage. At least that’s been my experience. Admittedly I have stayed with Xerox for too long - my bad. But still. What’s your experience? I wish that there are better options out there for all of us. We would be less stressed about being on a sinking ship.

I got a job at a manure processing plant. I told them where I last worked, and they said I was fully qualified.

If the skills you use at any job aren't helpful for getting another job, that's on you for not keeping your skills up to date. Learn new skills on your own that can optimize your job, it's good for you, it's good for Xerox, and it makes it easier to land a new job.

Wow you people generalize way too much. You think you know everything about everything.. well you don’t… not even close. Xerox blows completely. But just because you are at a job for over 5 years, now you are at a disadvantage?
Ummm. Not so much. If you can stick it out through Xerox’s cr-p, you can pretty much handle anything. As bad a choice it was staying at xerox, give yourself some credit for trying to make it work. Fruitless as it was. If you leave there that’s a pretty darn good first step. Good luck 🍀

So a few of you have an opinion that,
Sales
Service
Mgmt./leadership
Billing
Logistics ,
Are skills that NOBODY would be interested in.
Have you even read current job postings?
What are your supernatural skills that have you placed in the rare air?

"Wrong - you have no transferable skills. Even if you did staying at a job for more than 5 years or so is frowned upon by hiring managers these days."

Wrong. My skills are applicable anywhere and are not XRX or role specific. Moved every 2-3 years within XRX to positions of increasing responsibility. Resume is solid. Experienced professionals have these barriers:

  1. higher side compensation
  2. perception of being hard to manage from weak hiring managers
  3. not dependent upon salary
  4. perception of being change adverse

If you are over 55, good luck.

No responses from over 100 applications. Ageism…

My VP loved that I worked at Xerox. For many people outside of Xerox, there is still an association with a once-great brand. The training we received was actually pretty great. I only ever made yellow-belt because we all had to take it. I started green but just didn't have the time, but I have that on my resume as a skill and it's frequently commented on. I don't have a project management degree which is a thing now, but I put project management skills down. Resumes these days are all about skills and accomplishments. "I brought in $X on this project, I saved the company $X on that project. Download some examples, people sometimes post theirs on LI. I found it to be helpful that I worked at a Fortune 500. The soft skills that you have from Xerox are worth more than you think. But I guess it depends on what you're trying to do. I definitely did not think my skills were transferrable when I left. But I make about $25k more now.

Come on!! Get up!

Figure out what skills you do or do not have, and search for something that fits and brush up if you can on missing skills.

Xerox paid you and you stuck around, that end of the bargain was kept! Look in mirror figure it out and get going.
