Thread regarding Highmark Health layoffs

Future of Highmark, enGen

Hi, with constant layoffs, how do you realistically see the future of Highmark and enGen. Are we really not making $$ and outlook is bleak? Shouldn't the management team the first to go if they can't improve our profits or future outlook? I am with the company for few years now and love what I do, also good at it but I am scared to be let go. Every quarter result, leaders says the same thing that outlook is bleak and we are not making enough money.

Highmark's executive leadership wants everyone to sacrifice yet they themselves sacrifice nothing. How about reducing your annual bonus and investing in modern technology. It's h that I work on tech older than I am.

To DoISoundBitter... you're closer than me. I have five years left to go until retirement. I'm highly skeptical I'll make it until then, but at my age it'll be difficult to find a position at another company

Once IBC jumped ship, the writing was clearly on the wall.

I was part of a layoff in 24, it su-ked at the time but the severance was acceptable and I was able to claim unemployment until I found another position. After being out of Highmark for a few months I can say my stress levels have decreased dramatically and I’m much happier at my new company. Being paid considerably more also helps. I worked with some great people but I would never go back there.

The experience that I've had with bonuses and leaving Highmark is that if you worked AT LEAST 1,000 hours during the calendar year (i.e. 2023), you will get your full bonus in Spring the following year (i.e. 2024). It would stand to reason that 2025 will be no different for those who left in 2024.

Bonuses will still be paid out, but you will not get the full amount you are eligible for.

I'm wondering if the recent financial performance shared by the CEO might impact the possibility of a bonus.

Thanks all, looks like I need to start looking for opportunities outside, once I get my bonus, I can leave. It's time I spread my wings.

You'll probably get more money if you leave anyway. Highmark is generally below market average for pay, if that is a worry. Of course there's other things to consider when changing jobs but, something to keep in mind.

It may be a very difficult decision to leave due to "being held hostage by your paycheck" (whether it's a feeling of not getting what you make now or even finding a job quick enough), but I do believe that whether you are "let go" or you leave "on your own terms", the very fact that you leave Highmark or enGen will be one that you do end up appreciating in the long term. Highmark is a company that I wish I had never gotten involved with. it started out great (1998) when we still had some semblance of Pennsylvania Blue Shield, but as the Pittsburgh Highmark was "infecting" us more and more and more (well in place by 2013), it became apparent that Corporate Highmark (Pittsburgh) had a mentality all its own that differed from normal populations. It was almost like living a real-life "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" where they take over, and eventually you become "one of them" or you are left for dead. The REAL downfall, in my view, came when Dave Holmberg (Highmark) and Matt Ray (HM Health Solutions) took over, and things simply plummeted from there. As difficult as it is, I would seek employment elsewhere. It will NOT get better with the Body Snatcher leadership in place.

Me and my spouse both work hard and make a decent living. Spouse now thinks that I need to look outside so that the negative thought of letting go will go away. My only concern is that most companies will be the same. So unsure if I should look outside or not.

You are going to see funding dry up for next year and beyond. Only thing that will receive funding is mandates or things that are are needed to run the business. Ive already heard of about roles being consolidated and job title changes. Im sure this was done to see where the redundancy is so they can trim the fat some more. Use to be a great place to work but I'm glad to be gone

If there were any justice in the world, when a company performs badly, yes the management would be let go or at least take a paycut to their excessive salaries. But that just isn't how the world works. They basically never face consequences unless something illegal happens. I am not sure what the future of Highmark is and yes, the company really is struggling, but I feel strongly that it is only a matter of time before enGen is just gone, or at least, has no staff onshore except for a few token management positions.

The only reason I'm not looking for another job is because I'm retiring in a year and the severance package would bring me close to that date with no loss of pay. If I had more time to go until retirement, you bet I'd be looking. I don't believe it's an 'if' you get laid off, but 'when'. They'll be changing their name soon to BCBS of India and the Philippines, and Thrive will be doing our work for pennies on the dollar. Thirty-five years in the industry, and I never thought I'd end my career working in a daily dumpster fire. What a disappointment.
