@nws+1vK5cfbw, IIRC, the paperwork says nothing about how to apply for UI. Plus it varies from state to state.

The better answer would be to read the info on your state’s Employment Commission’s site.

I’ve been confused as to whether or not I’m eligible for UI starting the date Cisco ends my employment or not because they pay ~30 days pay in leu of notice plus the 4 months of severance. My state says we’re not eligible until after the date the severance pay is calculated for. So is that 30 days after the employment ends or 5 mo after the employment ends?

I’ve filed as soon as I’m terminated & let the state figure it out & I’ve collected after 2 weeks.

If you've been legitimately laid off (especially if it involved an official WARN letter which you should've received), then getting approved for UI in CA is a relatively painless process. Just be sure you are honest with them about any/all $ you've earned/received, and when.

What about what they're asking re: severance or details of your pay history concerns you about that incurring possible delays? You should apply for UI the day you're officially unemployed, because there is a week or 2 lag from when you apply, to when you're approved to start receiving UI $.

Just make sure you have documentation (e-paystubs, WARN letter, $ amounts of expected upcoming near-future payments ie: severance, bonus, HSA/COBRA/PTO payout, etc.) You don't have to submit all of that documentation to UI unless they ask for it, just answer honestly whatever they ask about that stuff on your application or if you get called for a phone interview. If they call you, just answer in simple yes/no or specific and succinct answers...don't volunteer any added info. or ramble with answers. Just be upfront with them and you'll be fine. It's not like you're trying to scam UI, right? So don't worry about any delays.

Suggestion: when you get your BofA or whichever financial institution now may be issuing the UI "debit card", use that to withdraw ALL of your UI $ IN CASH on the day it gets loaded onto your card. Then just deposit that cash into wherever you do your banking, so it's safe. There are a lot of e-scammers and you want that $ to be in your possession, not just sitting there on some CA UI age-old decrepit system's server, ripe for the hacking, or other SNAFU BofA et al are known to pull where their "system is currently unavailable".

Ca$h is still king.
Use it to your advantage!
