The worst thing about 3Ms DEI initiatives were the Old Boys Network who signed up as allies. Many of them were racist to the core and signed up since it was a CEO led initiative and made them look good and also gave them something to write about as part of their EPR.

I was hired as DEI work bee, and never feel I have any privilege, and laid off last year. No promotion in 10years. Just telling the truth.

If you have been affected by racist DEI practices please contact a lawyer to learn your rights and options! We cannot let this go without accountability!

A great example of DEI during Covid era. An SVP or equivalent position in Communications Market Division (CMD), continued to hog her position, even though CMD was long gone ....why....since this person was from a certain 5 letter community and hence considered DEI. Even though the division was sold, she continued to remain as a high profile executive drawing a fat salary !

3M doesn't promote talent, and I'm not sure they promote skin color, either. They promote family and friends.

True

"The masses have realizes that DEI is nonsense..."

The problem is that literally half of all people possess below average intelligence, but due to cronyism, nepotism, and bias, many of them have risen to ranks where they're convinced that they're smart, capable people worthy of respect.

So for those people DEI actually is bad, because it means that they're not enjoying an artificially reduced field of competition.

Then there are the people who are actually racist and s-xist. For those people, they think DEI is bad because they want to limit opportunity to just white guys.

Finally, there are the people who are just regular d-mb, and they've been convinced by other people that DEI is bad because... Uhhh. Obama never showed us his birth certificate! You can't convince a d-mb person of anything because they lack the capacity for reasoned thought.

Which means that we have a large number of people who hate DEI, not because it's genuinely problematic, but because they themselves are loudly, proudly ignorant.

Meanwhile, those of us with actual talent and skills aren't concerned because the reality is that the number of "diverse" people who have a doctorate and a decade-plus of experience is so low as no represent no threat to my job or opportunities.

DEI is far-left political ideology that started in humanities departments at coastal universities that managed to infect nearly every institution in the country through progressive activists. Thankfully the masses have realized that DEI is nonsense and are finally pushing back. That said, 3M has many other issues and DEI probably doesn't make the top 5.

I doubt anyone is buying more 3M products because of the diversity of the management team.

3M isn't in the shape it's in because of DEI. Think earplugs and PFAS lawsuits. Think ex-GE employees. Think about money spent on stock buybacks instead of R&D or plant upgrades.

Why the uproar? Why do so many dislike DEI?
I think there is an assumption that DEI will replace those in power with people who have not had power. Instead, it is about expanding the pie. There is a lot of unnecessary fear that DEI lowers standards. But that’s false reasoning. Facts and data have proven that, more likely than not, DEI initiatives identify the best candidate. White non-DEI folks may not have the nuanced skills needed to succeed in today's environment.

The real beauty of adding diversity
There is a concrete business aspect to DEI: People want to be in the company of and have business relationships with those who are like them. That is the essence of affinity bias — another mental shortcut. Yet, the real beauty of adding diversity is that you are able to have a smarter team, innovate, avoid overlooking something that could be significant and expand the pie, which benefits everyone. 3M HR — like many businesses — has seen an increase in clientele and work because of the diversity of our teams. This is one practical benefit of DEI.

I now can tell the majority of people posting. Good insight. Wish I was actually surprised. The loudest voice isn’t always the one wielding the power. Until there is fresh thinking and new thinking people and diversity of thinking the company isn’t going to be capable of any real innovation. Innovation is tied to stock price. If we don’t innovate in meaningful growth areas none of this matters because the layoffs continue, the “right sizing” and consolidations continue and the company continues to miss targets.

A big issue is what one person mentioned -- diversity of thought. They seem to want people to just nod and agree -- disagree or show anger and you're done

DEI at 3M is white women. That's the actual target, increasing women at leadership levels because 3M learned almost 10 years ago it was too hard to retain diverse talent in the twin cities so they pivoted their targets to making sure that women were represented at all JGs. 90% of the budget is actually focused on recruiting and retaining women. So DEI is not what most people think it is at 3M. Stop the go woke foolishness unless you have insights into what is actually going on at the top.

Diversity came first. It made sense. However, Diversity seemed more focused on gender and race than Diversity of thought. But it wasn't a showstopper.

Then Inclusion came along. I was find with this in principle but inclusion seemed to mean you had to check your conservative politics at the door. Still, it was fine because it was sold mildly.

The really morale ki-ler is Equity. The idea of equal results (promotions to make up for some genuine s-xism and subtle racism). Problem was unless you got promoted by cronyism (a 3M core competency) older white males were stuck at their job level for the rest of their career. Equity is like makeup calls in sports. The ref misses a holding call and gets chewed out by the coach. Then oddly enough the other team gets called for a flimsy holding.

Promote hard work, ethics, and results.

I think 3M went too woke lately and I personally have witnessed DEI features being favored over merit especially at JG16+ levels.
I’m almost certain that we have a target to have
Xx% directors that are female
xx% jg16+ that are people of color etc
Instead of focusing on background, we are just promoting whoever helps the DEI case. To me this is the definition of corruption and most of these people are untouchables. When they lay people off, its never the DEI hires.

Yeah, DEI is not the problem here.

Yeah, but there's also no denying that many people higher up are there because of cronyism, not skin color.

3M doesn't promote talent, and I'm not sure they promote skin color, either. They promote family and friends.

You go woke you go broke! Why can’t we just treat everyone with respect. DEI is responsible for Division. Stop playing the victim blame game and start treating people with dignity and respect. 3M is woke and will never be on top. Next 5 years 3M will not Exist. Failure upon failure!

There is no denying that there were some DEI candidates that got unduly promoted or moved into plum positions who were not qualified based on their talent and performance.

Even Walmart didn’t see the value in DEI and just rolled it back.

The problem with 3M leadership talking about DEI initiatives is using those initiatives to cover up their bigotry. In division meetings it was always the racist/s-xist white men who chimed in "I am an alley" and couldn't stop talking about how they support DEI. All fake. As a black female, I found DEI initiatives actually hurt my career since everyone assumed I got my promotion because of my skin color not because I deserved it.

Great?

I'll never understand the griping about DEI at 3M -- are there a bunch of white guys not getting jobs because our ranks are chock full of non-white ladies?

Or is it just a dog whistle? Because you can't actually believe that a third-rate reject like Bill Brown is going to return this company to the glory days, when you used to be able to smoke in the office and women were relegated to the typist pool.
