3M evolving WYW, it's official on 3M Go

Check under the Work Your Way FAQs.

  1. Why is 3M evolving work your way and if money collaboration days?? We need to reinvigorate growth and continue to improve our operational performance. To help do that, we will introduce Collaboration days to help nurture a culture of collaboration, learning and problem solving.

From what my manager said, this will start in November and the collaboration days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

To the people wondering why ‘boomers’ are still working, because they don’t have to go into an office. Many have likely moved to their retirement locations and want to hang on to the salary and company funded health benefits. If return office was required sooner, I bet several folks would have already retired.

@1car+1v6BzOvA - judging by BBs age, he's always had an exit strategy, with an exit almost certainly before he hits 5 years.

Short term we might see some people leave but those who stay will be disgruntled and as soon as the job market improves 3M is going to be a place no new talent wants to work for. Why as a scientist or engineer would I want to come to 3M? Facilities are sub par, we will never hit targets for true new product launches - so I hope BB has his exit strategy because In less than 5 years you will have your wish and no one will work here. Your best and most valuable resource is your people. Short sighted.

3M messed up gloriously by going all-in with WYW, not a lot of science-based thought with that decision. Are the creators of WYW still here? If so, they will be very resentful as will the returning remote workers who will be freshly uprooted and angry.

I don't think that many people will leave because of this. The market is horrific and remote opportunities are increasingly rare unless you have a very specialized or in-demand skillset.

Boomers who are still working should have retired by now. What's wrong with you that you're still in the workforce?

Typical entitled brat on the attack without a clue.

BB won't need to end it directly for all employees.

They may be positioning this as a 3-day-in-office requirement only for JG16+. But you need to realize that if those JGs are forced to return, they in turn will force their direct reports to return to office as well, and that ultimately will trickle down to everyone in their organization.

This is just the beginning. BB eventually will end remote work and for the people that don't want to come back it will work in 3M's favor because then no paying severance.

Good luck trying to find another remote job now. The experiment of remote work is over. It was never meant to be permanent.

So much people on here that are spoiled saying you have to buy clothes, and daycare. What did you guys do before when remote work wasn't a thing?

I belong to early Gen x worker here. Just cruising and waiting for my retirement package. Whether work in office or wfh, doesn't matter. I won't be giving much to work anyway. Let the senior management worry about their KPIs as they will be rewarded handsomely when share price is up.

I wonder how many of those threatening to leave will leave and find a job that doesn’t require to go to an actual office. Good luck!! And stop complaining because you have to actually work!!

Post ID: @1gud+1v6BzOvA

Admittedly, I have been thinking about this constantly all day. I know it is entitled to even complain. I will do it and change my life in reverse of how I changed everything in 2020. I maybe will build some resiliency. Sure, I can think of how to make it positive. I won’t want to be miserable after all.

But I still just want to be more remote. I was totally okay with going in once a week. I manage our relationship with 4 vendors and manage a few projects in EMEA from the US. I work with APAC time zones as well. If I am just in the office to be on Teams meetings, that is just d-mb. We all need to stand up for what makes sense. If you go in to sit alone or be on Teams all day - then stay home.

"There’s about to be A LOT of Millennial and Gen Z talent leaving the company if this is a requirement.” Two words: Good Bye

So, what's your plan when you need to print out that email?

Boomers who are still working should have retired by now. What's wrong with you that you're still in the workforce?

How many people were staying only because of WYW? It will be interesting to see if we lose the people we want or lose the people we don’t.

There’s about to be A LOT of Millennial and Gen Z talent leaving the company if this is a requirement. Not to mention colleagues with young families that need flexible schedules. Employees that moved out of state years ago during COVID. And many more. 3M just became a very undesirable place to work and hire fresh talent.

@1gay+1v6BzOvA

Obviously I only get info second hand and through the press these days, but my thoughts so far:

  • Leaders should be visible, I actually agree with 3M there. I might have drawn the line even lower, JG14+ with direct reports and all JG16+.
  • 3 days a week isn't bad, for most office workers that seems close to right. (Some more, some less.)
  • Syncing in-office days within work groups is also a good thing.

However:

  • Exceptions need to be made for people who don't have their work group local to them. There is zero point going to an office if all you will be doing is Teams meetings with people in different time zones.
  • Hotel offices and cr-ppy open office concepts will absolutely wreck morale for those that have to be in them. If 3M wants people in the offices, they should make the offices reasonably pleasant to be in. I honestly would resign any position that tried to force me into a hotel desk arrangement.

It will be interesting to see if the leaders practice what they preach.

The reality is that productivity is very unlikely to drop and more likely to increase with this change. Hotel offices are terrible but not the end of the world.

And, attrition is very likely to increase even though there are fewer remote job postings every day; 3M wants some attrition.

So, this is a win-win given 3M’s current state.

Calling it now. BB is over his skis cocky about the stock price increase. Nothing has fundamentally changed and this is how run awry of the employees. It’s all downhill after this quarter.

Also that jet sure flies into Florida a lot for a guy whos gonna be there every day!!

Folks with global roles, hybrid totally makes sense for them due to the time difference. Lots of folks don’t have global roles though.

I work hard in my remote role. I am part of the global team and never shut down before midnight.
I like what I do and the impact I create. However, I am unsure if I can physically travel for two hours a day to and from the office AND handle all the late-night calls.

Future at 3M seems duller just when things began to feel like they were on an upswing.

I understand flexibility and balance, but most of the comments scream, entitled. If you want fully remote, there are other companies. I notice press release says 85,000 employees worldwide. Are there still that many employees?

Finally there is some justice. Plant workers can feel more balanced now, having seen their regional remote workers enjoying wfh for past years. No more afternoon naps or walking the dogs during office hours...get your b*tts to work!

I am also confused - is it JG16+ or no? I have seen a mail from my function that makes it sound like it is everyone but then some of the published 3M-wide material makes it sound otherwise. Off to a great start!

Why isn't there a mechanism for employees to provide feedback? Also, the article in news makes statements towards only JG16 and up being required and rest not fully required but emails seem otherwise which is confusing. Which is it?

I am truly disappointed in our new CEO for reneging on WYW. It was the one thing that we heard from applicants that made them choose 3M over competitors for roles. We are able to be with our families, save on daycare, save on gas, save on needing a car, and still get all of our work done no problem. Over half our teams are not in Minnesota and we will all still be stuck sitting on MS teams calls with 0 benefit. Making us spend more money on gas/lunches/work attire, waste our time commuting, and making us LESS productive by far. What a horrible decision with less than 2 weeks notice no less. How degrading.
