Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

At this point I hope to be laid off this coming round

It’s not even about Cisco per se. I don’t even care what state Cisco is in or where it’s heading. I have been here for too long. I’m burnt out, tired and bored out of my mind. I just need a change. Good luck to those who need this job, I hope you get to keep it. In my case - unless I’m laid off, I’ll leave on my own.

Imagine being "bored" at your job while making 6 figures?

If you successfully specified, designed and built skyscrapers at previous jobs and your current job is being the guy behind the horses in the parade marching by those skyscrapers with a bucket and a shovel, "bored" will be only one of many negative feelings you'll have. The vast majority if Cisco's "development budget" was maintenance which means that's the vast majority of development work they have to offer. P00per-scooper isn't a dream job for the competent.

If someone reading this is interviewing for Cisco and are getting promises of development work you better have an iron clad agreement your project won't be cancelled and you handed a shovel and bucket of your own. It has been done, but it's extremely rare and even then having enough unobstructed runway to do all you are capable of will be extremely limited by everyone else being shuffled in then right back out of your program.

Sounds like everything you do should be replaced by a computer.

Place is too much of a ponzi scheme to hope they would do an ER. How else can they keep paying the dirt bags in the ELT their millions if they have to take care of a handful of 20+ year dedicated employees? Really, I'll take an LR now and wouldn't look back for a second.

People who want more from their career change jobs, grow skills, achieve higher titles and make a lot more money. Remain jealous of those that did, but don't expect a handout because you didn't.

Red flag alert: this is going to come screaming through when you try to interview. I was lucky that when I hit that wall I was in software and I could start a project on my own time to rebuild some passion. You can leverage the passion about talking about what you've done well in a broader context than Cisco and are excited about doing even better in the future. If you have some jobs under your belt you have some cover to ask some questions about where you've seen things go wrong to fish for clues as to whether the potential employer is going to be making the same mistakes Cisco does. I know a few good people who left and came back because they actually found companies that were worse.

@OP is showing his helplessness and is undecided 🤷‍♀️

Lay-off come down as a hammer. Hoping to selected for LR is not a strategic I would use.

@OP will be the last one leaving. And have to be dragged out even then. Stop talking and just leave

Was going to resign on my own if not chosen. Luckily I was this time. Just couldn’t handle any more of the BS with the wrong people in leadership who know nothing about the business….asking you to place cycles on work that provide zero value. It was truly mind-boggling. Thankfully it’s over.

Control your path and leave now.

Cisco is different now. Products are meh. Leadership is uninspiring.
the constant layoff fears are tiring.

the contract is broken and they know it.

OP is full of ish. If you intended to make a change for yourself, you'd have done it already. If you don't get LR'd the next round, you won't leave.

Ironically, if you did leave, both you and Cisco would be better for it.

But you won't...because you don't want to be accountable. You're stuck in a victim loop.

You need some David Goggins level inspiration.

Hope is not the right strategy in a work place.
