Medtronic to temporarily lay off 237 workers in Santa Ana

Medtronic Inc. announced plans to temporarily lay off 237 workers at its Santa Ana business unit by Dec. 4, according to an EDD filing.

In an emailed statement, Medtronic spokeswoman Erika Winkels said that the Santa Ana manufacturing site will temporarily close for three weeks in December.

“Following the company holiday break in late December, we expect production to resume in early January with our full production team,” said Winkels, who made no mention of compensating their furloughed employees over the break.

In a letter filed with EDD on Oct. 4, Medtronic employee relations specialist Bryan Tellez-Tolentino wrote that the company plans to shut down manufacturing due to “roof remediation” at the facility at 1851 E. Deere Ave. Beginning in early December, employees in four “clean rooms” will not be coming on site, he said. “We anticipate that these plans would be temporary.”

So what? This is a standard process for something like this. They’re repairing the roof! Nobody can be in the buildings while repairs are underway. Relax all you whining anti-MDT losers.

ALWAYS file unemployment! If your furloughed or hours cut, ALWAYS file for unemployment.

So if these employees are “temporarily” laid off, do they lose their PTO, thus forcing them to apply for unemployment?

So Medtronic is happy to let the government pay the wages of these employees “temporarily.”

Nice job using corporate welfare Medtronic. You used to be so much better than this.

They have added so much clean-room related air handling equipment to the roof of the Deere building that it has become unstable. They need 5-6 weeks to reinforce the roof and keep it from imploding. Employees told to apply for unemployment if they don't want to use their PTO during this time.
