Last week, my manager caught me looking up job openings. Of course, I denied it when he asked but I don't think he bought it. I’ve been thinking about leaving Exxon for a while now, but I’m wondering if this could backfire. If he knows I’m planning to leave, is there a chance it could put my current position at risk? I'd hate to be fired before I have something else lined up.

You could be sacrificed next cycle. If managers are sacrificing people who change teams then this is not a stretch.
Company have no obligations similar to you.
Quite sad they don't value long term
You have some time, until next assessment period. Make good use of it. Employers love EM employees.
Your ranking will suffer. Since you are seeking for exit anyway, why would ur boss fight for you for higher ranking buckets? Instead, you will be the fodders of the next PDS cycle. The truth hurts, but, good luck with your job hunting!
Who cares what your boss thinks. Do what’s best for you!
Why would you care? If ur such a worry wart, dont take risks.
My boss has been out for 3 weeks on vacation and COVID. Business did not stop, no one cares, she provides ZERO value, and is irrelevant to our team. However, she still has a very high, well paid job. I'm tired of HiPos. They have ruined this once great company.
Honestly, no, you wouldn’t be fired. It’s nearly impossible to get legal endorsement to fire someone, unless you violate certain “cardinal rules “ that you can find on EMConnect.
What you did is not a fireable offense unless your boss wants to argue that you violated the corporate misuse of assets, which you didn’t.
If you are a good employee, it should make your boss want to keep you even more and make you happy.
“Could I lose my job if my boss knows I'm planning to leave?”
If you’re in the U.S. and in any state other than Montana, you can be fired for any reason (or no reason), so long as the reason isn’t related to some federally protected category such as race, religion, etc.
So yes, your boss can terminate you for planning to leave. That’s why pros never discuss their plans with people at work.
Tw
I'm looking for your replacement as of right now.
If your manager CAUGHT you looking up jobs, then what was the point of lying about it? It's normal behavior to keep aware of other opportunities, but maybe not doing it openly while at work.
Plot twist. Tell his boss and HR that he’s been looking at other jobs.
Sounds like youl get what you want regardless. You should be happy
Well, I know lies have gotten people fired faster than anything.
Were you using company equipment for this non company activity?
