Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Steady stream of layoffs, look for increase toward year-end

A steady stream of job eliminations. Expect this to increase as we approach year-end. If you have experienced any of the following:

• Toxic, uncivil, or harassing work environment
• Retaliation
• Working hours without pay (hourly employees)
• Workplace safety issues
• Age discrimination (high risk if over 50 and a lot of 3M experience)
• Observed illegal or unethical 3M activity
• Wrongful termination or undeserved corrective action

Protect yourself by gathering evidence, documents, record conversations, take notes . . .
3M's HR, Ethics Hotline, and our leaders are all broken. If you report something inside of 3M, there will be huge efforts to identify why the corporation is not liable . . . anything to make the issue go away, anything to protect the corporation, analysis of every angle of your incident to identify how you caused the issue or the incident does not create a liability for 3M. Keep records as an insurance policy for when you are job eliminated.

Solution #1 is to report 3M to a newspaper, magazine, or broadcast tiplines.
Solution #2 is to call a litigation attorney.
Solution #3 is to whistleblow to the appropriate government agency such as State Attorney General, EEOC, EPA, FDA, DOJ, OSHA, DOD, etc.

Do all three! The more details, documents, and contacts you send, the better chance the story will be published, you will win the lawsuit or the government will follow-up.

The post on wage settlement is old news-this was announced in May

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced today that as part of a settlement with his office, 3M must pay $961,394.93 in back wages to 1,690 employees as a result of unauthorized paycheck deductions.

The Assurance of Discontinuance, filed today in Ramsey County District Court, resolves an investigation by Attorney General Ellison’s office into the company’s payment practices.

3M made deductions from its employees’ pay without first obtaining the employees’ voluntary written authorization in violation of Minnesota Statutes section 181.79. These deductions were made to correct various overpayments, which resulted from factors including COVID-19 pandemic-related absences, incorrect calculations of salary base pay, and incorrect overtime calculations.

“It was wrong for 3M to deduct money from workers’ paychecks without their knowledge and agreement,” Ellison said. “I am pleased that 3M was willing to cooperate with my office by returning money to workers and changing its deduction policies going forward.”

Under the terms of the settlement, 3M has also developed and instituted a written protocol for deductions from employee wages, which includes obtaining written authorization from employees prior to making deductions for lost or stolen property, damage to property, or to recover any other indebtedness.

Filing a complaint as a worker
Workers with concerns or complaints about systematic violations of state and federal wage laws can contact the Attorney General’s Office through its online complaint form, which is available in Spanish or English. The Attorney General’s Office can also be contacted by phone at (651) 296-3353 (Metro area) or (800) 657-3787 (Greater Minnesota).

3M is the retaliation corporation.

I've been constantly retaliated in many forms and it's still on going. By far the worst company I've worked for. These people deserve a nice spot in he-l imo. Not the coworkers or the work but the sh-t filled management and hr that conduct unethical behavior then double down to protect themselves and their drinking buddies. No accountability for these individuals and it's fkn disgusting. How hard is it to replace a holes with decent human beings? Get your sh-t together BB and 3M or lawsuits will be never ending.

There is something wrong here. This post does not warrant all of the negative reactions. I really appreciate the OP, but maybe that is because I have been the victim of the following by my manager:

• Toxic, uncivil, or harassing work environment
• Retaliation
• Observed illegal or unethical 3M activity
• Wrongful termination or undeserved corrective action

Discrimination based on nationality
Bullying, harassment and more.

The advice by the OP is very helpful. I really, really wish I had recorded the many times my manager yelled at me, made discriminating comments about me, and more.

When I submitted my complaint to the Ethics and Compliance website the HR person who reviewed my complaint told me I did not submit enough evidence to prove my allegations. I had the email to my manager stating how upset I was that she yelled at me and much, much more but that was not enough. I did give the HR contact the name of people who participated in calls when my manager yelled at me or showed disrespect to me but HR did not contact any of these people. As we all know, HR does not protect employees.

I am writing an article I will share with the media and the relevant government agency. I agree with the OP 3M will not change its toxic culture on its own. It is time for change.

No layoffs in my division. In fact, we recently added a couple FTEs in our area. And looking to add more. Do not believe the doom-and-gloom posters. Our division is doing well and growing (in revenue, profits and people!!).

Definitely padding the bottom line by not investing is not sustainable. Same old tired McNerny playbook. Go ahead, downvote the truth, lackeys.

Not sure why post is downvoted. McKinsey is here. You know what they do? They make money cutting headcount. Goes something like this. They tell the officers there’s an opportunity to cut $xM in labor costs. HC targets go to SVPs and they have a ridiculous short amount of time to make HC reductions. Because HR has NO org. design practitioners, leaders make arbitrary decisions on who gets cut. Of course there’s a legal review to make sure things pass the sniff test, but if you’re a highly compensated J14 or J15 you offer the biggest bang for the buck. Guess who doesn’t do a HC reduction for themselves? SVPs and EVPs. McKinsey gets paid based on how much cost efficiency they actually realize versus what they forecast. They’re also smart enough to realize that most companies don’t have org design practitioners so then leaders have to rehire them to put back together their org structures so they can function properly.

but with MM for over 20 years,, it wasn't until around 7 years ago , i finally began to understand that you are only a number, you are a nobody, just do your job as best you can and don't complain about anything, do not put yourself forward for anything, you will always get knocked back, not once or twice but enough times to nearly break you and then you will take stock and leave or else quiet quit. just keep telling yourself , no one cares and you will see your pension out

Everyone of the 8,500 layoffs had huge personal and family impacts. Same for the ones that happen between now and yearend.

Laugh and mock all you want until you are impacted. It’s not fear mongering always, sometimes it is just fact. How would you like to be 6 months from retirement and get laid off? It’s not rare it is common. No more LTI for lower job grades, end of the pension plan, no career development and layoffs ever looming. The only ones who haven’t been hurt are executives. They are making millions and everyone else is just a cog in the process.

3M job eliminated 8,500 people. They discontinued reporting layoffs. Likely over 10,000 by now. Shameful.

Executives are doing a good job propping up the stock price for now, but with all the cutting to the bone it won't be sustainable long term. Oh, and yes age discrimination is real at 3M, been there! They don't even try to hide it in thier job posting footnote.

Audio clips are everything. Without recordings, HR will say:

"That's not what was said"
"You misunderstood"
"So happy, there are no unresolved issues, don't you agree"

With leadership on tape, attorneys will take your case. They'll line up, pick me!

I can trust 3M because in the last few years 3M has shown integrity, trust and fair play:

  1. Fatal workplace safety incidences in Prairie du Chien and Alexandria
  2. Layoff of 8,500 people
  3. Falsely declared Aearo bankrupt
  4. Unauthorized paycheck deductions
  5. Hazardous waste mis-management in Cottage Grove
  6. Earplug safety lawsuits
  7. Bribery charges in China
  8. Global PFAS contamination
  9. Export violations
  10. Product issues with Bair Hugger, 40,000 earmuff recall, fall protection recall, etc
