Think twice before you jump ship

With the economy in rough shape, it's smart to be cautious. Whatever you do, don't quit until you're certain you’ve locked down a new gig. Make sure to do your homework: read up on the company, check out employee reviews, and ask plenty of questions in your interviews. Job security is key, so make sure the next step is solid before making any big moves. You want to end up in a better situation, not jump out of a frying pan into a fire. Sadly, I'm talking from personal experience here.

"I hear there is a severance agreement you have to sign. Can't start a new job or lose your severence. Any truth to this?"

Even if it were true, how would they enforce this?

I had an interview last week where the interviewer mentioned that there were over 1,000 applicants. This is for a lead engineer position

That's a great Plan A that most people should adhere to.

That said, Plan B should be the freedom to jump ship if it means maintaining one's personal intergrity and wellbeing.

So yeah, Plan A first but also plan for Plan B—save up 6-18 months of your gross salary that you can tap if you need to leave a job without going to another. I know that's a longer-term goal for most people. But it's really never too late to start. Try 10% of your takehome every month.

I'd say definitely wait until 9/24 to know if you're staying or going. If your let go, at you'll have severance while you devote yourself to job search w/o distraction of having to do work for this company

Eventhough unemployment rate is 4.2% doesn't mean that it's all nice jobs out there. for IT the jobs better than this cr-p of a sh-t show and few and far between.

I was laid off in August, and the job market is the worst I've seen outside of the pandemic. The prospect of not finding a job before the holidays is scary. Many people's livelihoods have been and will be ruined due to this pi-s poor leadership.

This is one of few thread posts that I've seen with a charitable intent to be helpful to others who are facing a potential career loss in the midst of what is truly a horrific economy. Thank you for the tips that you provide based on your experience. It's much appreciated.
