Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM JV with Hyundai

Many Hyundai employees are ex-GMK. Hyundai pays better in Korea.

How’d that synergy work for Chrysler? First fiat then Peugeot. Matching a tu-d with more turds. It’s more realistic that ford and Gm merge to SURVIVE

Synergy and collaboration were exactly what Mary was looking for with RTO.

See how well it works?

Why GM’s no longer going all-electric — for now
https://theticker.org/13261/business/why-gms-no-longer-going-all-electric-for-now/

Despite General Motors Co.’s plans for an all-electric vehicle segment in North America, the auto manufacturer announced it would reintroduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles after challenges led to another decline in profits from its EV line.

But GM’s EV losses were less than before, narrowing $2.5 billion through 2023 compared to 2022’s $3.3 billion loss. The Detroit automaker made headlines after earnings were released the week of Jan. 29 — and its stock soared.

Yeah there’s no demand. Huh

I'm very happy with my 2019 Ionic Hybrid (which they discontinued and made Ionic their BEV line)

60 mpg, decent room for a small car. Hybrid cars make more sense.

Hyundai management is more shady than usual, for this industry. Yes, they are even shadier than GM management.

Until recently, Hyundais were so poorly made that they had to offer a 10 year bumper to bumper warranty in order sell them.

"We know our cars break down all the time, but we'll fix it for free."

That removes the financial worry, but not the worry about being randomly stranded by the side of the road.

That explains why so many Hyundai cars are fire hazards that can't be parked in the garage without burning down your house, and are so easy to steal that a 14 year old can do it in 5 minutes.

Remember the joint venture with Fiat? Pre bankruptcy? The one put together by the golden boy Rick Wagoner? The one that cost GM a billion dollars to get away from?
Pepperidge Farms remembers.

"Fiddling while Rome burns"

Building efficient and recyclable ICE cars while the invisible children in slavery mine lithium, cobalt and other precious non-sustainable rare earth minerals for EVs that have 1/3 the usage life of an ICE car.

"Legacies" - do you work for General Motors? A "legacy" company? If so, you are bold-faced hypocrite. If not, what are you doing trolling our site?
Either you are a hypocrite or a troll. Either way, reprehensible. Go back to your bridge.

Yes, you just listed legacies. I don’t Rgue that ppl don’t want their evs. Context, legacies legacies legacies

They are buying Tesla’s. Globally and it’s not going away. So government morors can keep investing in ICE. Fiddling while Rome burns

EV losses:
"GM Lost $1.7 Billion from Electric Vehicles"
https://powerthefuture.com/gm-lost-1-7-billion-from-electric-vehicles/

"Ford’s electric vehicle unit reported that losses soared in the first quarter to $1.3 billion, or $132,000 for each of the 10,000 vehicles it sold in the first three months of the year, helping to drag down earnings for the company overall."
https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/24/business/ford-earnings-ev-losses/index.html

That’s the dim truth? There's talk, and then there's data. Oops indeed.

Sure. Tesla isn’t selling them, oh wait they are and BYD. And making a profit on them. Ooops

It’s the legacies that CANT. That’s the dim truth but we’ll go with your opinion rather than data.

"lol. ICE and hydrogen???? Crazy talk. Those two are dead."

Wait, did you think all the rhetoric about EVs were actually real? LOL The board of directors gets consumer surveys and they absolutely KNOW that:

  1. People don't want EVs.
  2. GM loses tens of thousands on each EV sold.

They might be lairs and hypocrites but they aren't dim.

Hyundai gets to re-badge Mary's gas pig trucks/suvs (which really are GM's "chef kiss") and Mary can get a suite of already designed, saleable sedans & sub-compacts for a down market that are manufactured in Korea with Chevy logos. It will result in closed U.S. plants and a lot of people laid off in Warren. Broke Americans will snap up the new "Sonic" (rebadged Kia Soul) like hotcakes.

The obvious rub: You can get a rebadged Yukon/Blazer with a Hyundai logo at a 1/3 discount. In the business world, we call that "cannibalizing your sales". Is it desperation, or hubris? She clearly is out of her depth and surrounded by "yes" people. That is why we are seeing the flippant attitude toward workers. It will end in disaster and we are already seeing that in motion. I noticed she was wearing the leather jacket in the handshake promo picture. Someone clearly needs to say, "grandma, no!" We are being lead by the nose by out of touch boomers with delusional millennials whispering in their ears. SMH

How’d the partnership go with Nikola and Honda go?

Delusional thinking

lol. Prerequisite to a merger for survival. It’s too little too late.

Partnering with a company that is known for manufacturing POS vehicles. Smart. Can you just smell MBs desperation

The legacies missed the technology boat and they know it. They don’t have the expertise at this point and the pace is so fast for the ones are driving it that legacies can’t catch up.

Government Motors would’ve had a better shot partnering with Toyota but even they are struggling and won’t be able to compete..

As sleepy joe said, “you led the way Mary”.

Pathetic

This is the moment where the shoe falls but most weren't paying attention.
Q: "How can GM cut engineering staff when we are so short on staff?"
A: “Future collaboration (between GM and Hyundai) across key strategic areas in an effort to reduce capital spending and increase efficiencies."

Oh dear. I am assuming most of you know what's next.
In 2006, most of us knew things were going to get REALLY bad but at least we didn't have concerns like like have now (low cost imports with Chevy logos and failing EVs).
And on another note, Xi Jinping knows that Mary just called, "checkmate".

The endgame is not going to align well with Sean Fein's "war" with Mary or most of the remaining UAW & salary workers. "I hate this RTO" is going to become "gosh that's a nice tie sir, can I wash your car and get your coffee?"
