Peak of technical career at exxon

Does anyone know how much a chief in EMTEC can make? Of course cl, yee, etc will determine this but curious it you think 700k range is possible. Any information on this or confirmed max salary info on this would be very interesting

The peak of the technical career ladder is to be promoted to CL 28. This promotion is unrelated to your career and is solely to provide PIP bodies for the 28-29 rank group to protect HiPos on their way up.

The best technical job position performed perfectly is still no match for a Sponsored HiPo that contributed nothing during the period.

Who cares how much they make, you’ll be PIP’d in 5 years and your job moved to BTC for $15k/yr. Tell me you wouldn’t do the same if you were DW.

Even just as principal you will make more money than 95% of other places for people with similar experience. For all the negatives, exxon really rewards people who achieve any STP position, especially earlier in the career

The short answer is absolutely maybe , but it depends on what the prior positions were … most of these individuals had positions like senior pm (for project chiefs) or high level division managers … top CL is 33 but I’m not sure they’re making these positions this level any more

@1zer+1, pre-DW experience is completely irrelevant here. Chiefs really did used to be real executives and real executives really did make bank back in the day. But that was a decade ago.

Sorry to break this to you, but not everyone with an executive title has an executive CL. Lots are put into executive roles but held at CL29. You don’t hear about this because people in those positions don’t talk about it and delude themselves that they will soon get the CL they think they deserve.

Chiefs (as well as Principals and Senior Principals) are NOT the “peak of the technical career” at EM. They start as HiPos who, instead of going truly managerial, pretend to do technical work. As very well sponsored HiPos, they never get to do real technical work even early in their careers; they organize meetings, write down what the real workers’ results are and then they summarize it in highly simplified form to high level managers. They make sure that they confirm all the biases and the preconceived ideas that top managers have. They can talk endlessly about the deep meaning of every process without ever having done the corresponding work.

Chiefs start at CL 30, and the highest level Chief I was ever aware of was a 34 in Upstream back in the pre-DW days. At those levels, TC was about 60% base and the rest was RSUs and other incentive-based compensation. With a base of $450k, then a TC of over $700k is possible. But there may only be 1 or 2 of them in the whole corporation.

Chief is starting CL32 and then can actually pinnacle at CL33. Chief at CL32 base salary is in the range $450k - $550k. Then add in annual RSUs and bonuses that equate to another 60% - 100% of annual salary depending on ranking if in top 3 quintiles, for typical annual total renumetation salary of chief of $700k to $1M annually. That is why all technical track people at CL28-29 and Sr Principals backstab each other and withhold information so as one day they can be promoted to a chief level and be financially set for life.

No technical career at XOM will give you 700k ....

Chiefs are washed up, trump-voting linked in dwellers who subtract value from the company while actively convinced their ill-gotten privilege is merited. Their time is entirely spent sipping coffee while dropping non-sensical tidbits they believe sound intelligent. A more pompous and deluded bunch is to be found nowhere else. A rare species that xom has fathered.

The important part is the number of chiefs will decline going forward. Everything is moving to BTC. Not much for technical opportunities here.

Absolutely not making $700k. Chiefs are going to be in CL 29 to 31 range. Salary in the $330k to $400k range. Chief is an honorary late career position, not a high po position.
