Laid Off in 2019 - Checking in to see how those effected today are doing

Hi All,

I was laid off in 2019. I had worked at GM for 4 years in Atlanta/ Roswell Innovation Center. I was awarded my annual bonus for 2019, paid severance (In other words, my normal paycheck every two weeks), got to keep my insurance and pay from Feb 2019 to May 2019. They gave me free hiring services through LHH (They were ok but not giving my a new job really, more of a coach to keep me going applying and interviewing).

I wanted to ask the following:

  1. To anyone laid off recently - Did you receive a similar package?
  2. What is the current work culture like now?

I was also let go in 2019 and it was the best thing to ever happen to me. GM was a joke. Any time another department needed help my manager would say no, and give me some pointless task to do. My manager would block off his calendar from noon onwards 3 days a week to go jogging to Belle Isle and back. Managers from other areas would come to my desk all day asking where he was... it's no wonder our entire group got laid off. He took the package when it was offered, because of course he did. Everyone there was terrible to each other. Managers would make the biggest deal if you didn't understand something, yet didn't even know how to open SAP to do the work themselves.

GM is fully commited to safety and electric vehicles. We must bring the cost of EVs down so they are at parity with ICE vehicles for a zero zero zero future.

Yes, the post about a very toxic environment is 100% accurate. There is no longer team work, I think the root cause is that they are now forcing managers to have quotas for underperformers at each level, no matter how good the employee performance is, they must supply HR a list of targeted people to be gone whenever they feel like it, and the labor laws have no restrictions about it. It is very unfortunate, it is no longer a safe place to find a job, and do your tasks without fear or anxiety. The top leadership keeps ignoring the "Work Place of Choice" survey, were it's obvious the workforce is telling them, they can't trust anything they say. I wonder how this will create a productive/loyal/engaged/high-quality outcome environment. Hopefully it changes soon for the benefit of everyone.

I got laid off from GM in 2019. I worked for a year at a supplier but it was a really crummy place to work. Then I went to work at another OEM in SE MI, and got laid off again in 2023. I got fed up with the whole thing and moved back to my hometown to work in a similar industry. Things are better now but I have definite scares from what was done to me by the American auto industry. I’ll never buy a car from the two companies that I worked for as long as I live. I love my Toyota. 👍

To anyone laid off recently -

  1. Did you receive a similar package?

Nope. Everything has changed. 2-3 months severance.

  1. What is the current work culture like now?

Its extremely Toxic..To keep your job, you have to stab your workers in the back, hoping you get a better review than them.
