The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will lay off 32 tenured faculty members after the UW Board of Regents approved the recommended cuts.
In a letter to staff last week, Chancellor Mark Mone announced the layoffs and the closure of UW-Milwaukee's College of General Studies, including its three academic departments: Arts & Humanities, Math and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Business.
Mone attributed the decision to "significant and sustained enrollment declines that substantially affected the programs' cost-effectiveness."
The layoff notices will begin going out on Monday.
"I am deeply saddened by this scenario and wish it were not occurring. However, proceeding with the proposal is aligned with our mission and is the most responsible decision for UWM’s future," Mone said in the letter.
